Awards and Honors

Assistant Professor of World Languages and Cultures Juan Trujillo’s film, “Companions,” was selected as the best LGBT film at this year’s Oregon Independent Film Festival. The short film was produced last summer in a NW Documentary workshop (nwdocumentary.org) with support from the School of Language, Culture and Society. The film screened locally at the Corvallis Queer Film Festival and was an official selection for the 2015 Ethnografilm festival in Paris (ethnofilmfest.org). The OIFF screening will be on September 27 at the Clinton Street Theater in Portland as part of their short film bloc.

Current Research, Publications and Creative Activity

Rena Lauer, assistant professor of medieval and early modern history in the School of History, Philosophy and Religion, recently participated in a workshop at the University of Chicago on “The New Ancient Legal History,” offering a paper titled “Jewish Law and Litigation in the Secular Courts of the Late Medieval Mediterranean.”

Jeff Fearnside, an instructor in the School of Writing, Literature, and Film, recently had a short-story collection accepted for publication by the Stephen F. Austin State University Press. Provisionally titled Making Love While Levitating Three Feet in the Air: And Other Stories of Flight, it was previously a finalist for the New Rivers Press MVP Award and—this past May—the Permafrost Book Prize in Fiction. It is scheduled for release in March 2016.

Professor of English Richmond Barbour published “‘The English Nation at Bantam:’ Corporate Process in the East India Company’s First Factory,” Genre 48: 2 (July 2015), 159-192. The essay is part of a special  issue,Transcultural Networks in the Indian Ocean, Sixteenth-Eighteenth Centuries: Europeans and Indian Ocean Societies in Interaction.
