April 7

Free screenings of the 2012 documentary “Gold – You Can Do More Than You Think,” will be held April  6, 7 and 10 at Darkside Cinema in Corvallis. “Gold” chronicles the journeys of three athletes as they prepare for and participate in the 2012 Paralympic Games in London. The screenings are sponsored by the School of Language, Culture and Society and are co-sponsored by the OSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and by Parapictures Film Production. They are free and open to the public but attendees need to obtain a free pass at the snack bar after entering the theater. Screenings will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday, April 6; 7 p.m. Monday, April 7; and 9 p.m. Thursday, April 10. To enhance accessibility for the visually-impaired, the April 6 screening will include audio descriptions of the scenes.

Fairbanks Gallery Art, John Maul, A Generous Life, a commemorative exhibit of sculpture by John Maul, opens April 7 in Fairbanks Gallery. There will be an opening for the show, free and open to the public at 4:30-6 p.m., Thursday, April 10. A Generous Life presents a range of sculpture and celebrates the lifework of John Maul, who joined OSU Art in 1991.  Maul’s work is centered around three themes; Architecture, with its function as environmental sculpture; religious iconography, with its history of symbolic representation, both positive and negative; and vessel forms, with their natural connotations toward earth and protection. He was a person who enjoyed process in his work, and he loved to employ a wide range of media, surface, and texture in his work.

Three art majors, Laura Borgen, Jasmine Casimir and Julianne Perkins, will exhibit paintings and travel journal excerpts created during their study abroad in Siena Italy fall term 2013 at the West gallery in Fairbanks hall from April 7-April 18. There will be an opening reception for the artists on Monday April 7, from 5-6 p.m.. Gallery hours are 8-5 p.m., Mon. –Fri.. This event is free and open to the public.

April 8

Ian Boyden, “Avian Flame: Mirror Ecologies of the Mind Consumed,” 7 p.m. in the MU Journey Room. Environmental artist Ian Boyden will show images and speak about his recent art installation project. The free event will serve as the launch for the Spring Creek Project’s second annual Campus Creature Census.

AUDITIONS: Spring One-Act Festival 2014, June 4-8. There will be 12 student- directed one- act plays that will run the gamut from comedies to dramas, from classics to new plays.   Lots of parts for beginning and experienced actors. Auditions are open to all! Tuesday and Wednesday, April 8 and 9 at 7 p.m. in the Lab Theatre.

Working conditions for non-tenure track faculty:  Last spring, more than 1,200 non-tenure-track (professional, research, and instructional) faculty members filled out an OSU-AAUP/Faculty Senate survey.  The survey results will be discussed at noon, on April 9 in MU208.  Come hear about what is working, areas that need improvement, and discuss policy recommendations that demonstrate support to all of our colleagues who power orange.  For more information: http://osuaaup.org/ or Lori Cramer lcramer@oregonstate.edu.

The School of Public Policy brownbag series continues today, noon-1:00, when Dr. Rick Colwell (of CEOAS) will present “Baby Steps Towards OSU Carbon Neutrality”. The brownbag will be held in Fairbanks 304. The event is free and open to the OSU community.

Anthropology Tan Sack Lecture Series presents: Koreans in Central Asia: The Drama of Stalinist Deportation, Model Soviet Minority and Challenges in Post-Soviet Era.
Dr. Valeriy Khan, Institute of History, Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Fulbright at the University of Kansas. After the collapse of the USSR, nation- building in the new Central Asian states was characterized by growing nationalism. The presenter discusses the different living strategies of Koreans in these new conditions as well as the revival of Korean identity and the logic of the Korean movement. Noon, Waldo 201A.

Every Monday this term from 11-11:45 will be “Mindfulness Mondays” event in MU 213.  Mindfulness Mondays involve guided meditations.  It’s open to all, regardless of previous meditation experience. SPS Director, John Edwards is the facilitator on April 14 and 28.

The Oregon State University Chamber Choir, directed by Dr. Steven Zielke, will be on tour in Honolulu, Hawaii, April 9-13. The choir will perform at the Lokahi Choral Festival, a festival for high school choirs hosted by the Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus. The choir will also visit and sing for high school choirs at the St. John Vianney Parish School, the Punahou School and the Iolani School.  On Thursday, April 10, the OSU Chamber Choir will give a free, public performance at 7 p.m. at the Kawaiha’o Church, 957 Punchbowl Street, Honolulu. OSU singers hope to see Oregon State alumni and friends who live in Hawaii at the concert.

The music technology area in the School of Arts and Communication is hosting Ableton , maker of “Live,” the premier music creation and performance software; and “Push,” a hardware instrument for playing and composing with Live; on campus on Wednesday, April 30 as part of the Ableton University Tour . Oregon State is among a select group of universities to partner with the company for tours, where trainers and musicians visit schools to offer a day and evening of workshops and public presentations. Their OSU visit will include an afternoon workshop and breakout sessions for students exploring composition, sound design, production techniques and performance. There will also be a public presentation and concert in the evening. (Time and location TBA.)

Current Research, Publications and Creative Activity

School of Psychological Science assistant professor, David Kerr co-authored a paper published in JAMA Pediatrics entitled “Parental media monitoring of children’s media consumption: The long-term influences on children’s body mass indexes.”
 Kerr also presented a paper entitled, “Growth in girls’ and boys’ internalizing symptoms: Intergenerational transmission pathways from a 25-year prospective study” at the Society for Research on Adolescence conference in Austin, Texas. David’s colleagues in Slovenia also received a grant from their government to fund his role as a visiting researcher on their project, “A (se) štekaš? (Alive? Alive!) Research and prevention of suicide in Slovenia.”

Assistant professor of music education Jason Silveira was recently published in the Journal of Research in Music Education for his article investigating music and affective phenomena: Diaz, F. M., & Silveira, J. M. (2014). Music and affective phenomena: A 20-year content and bibliometric analysis of research in three eminent journals. Silveira will also be the featured presenter at the Music Teacher Education Special Research Interest Group at the biennial meeting of the National Association for Music Education Conference in St. Louis on Friday, April 11th. His research presentation is entitled: Perceptions and Concerns of Pre-service Choral Teachers Regarding Teaching Instrumental Music: A Case Study.
