Faculty and staff, did you know there’s a choir for you on campus? Sing on your lunch hour! University Chorale is a conducting lab for choral students, and we need you to be their choir. This is a fun, friendly, non-auditioned choir for campus and community singers of all levels, directed by Dr. Steven Zielke and OSU graduate teaching assistants. It meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. in Benton Hall 204. All are welcome. The Spring choir will begin on Thursday, April 3 at 12:00 p.m. in Benton 204. Questions? On February 22, Music faculty Rebecca Jeffers and Angela Carlson performed on the Between the Cracks series at the Corvallis Arts Center. Their program consisted of four piano pieces previously commissioned from composers who all live in Oregon or are Oregon natives.

The OSU Band program was fortunate to send a pep band of 30 players to the PAC12 women’s tournament in Seattle, March 6 & 7, and another band of 30 to Las Vegas for the men’s tournament, March 11 & 12.

Current Research, Publications and Creative Activity

School of Language, Culture, and Society Associate Professor Nana Osei-Kofi recently published a chapter: Osei-Kofi, N. (2014). Race in(out)side the classroom: On pedagogy and the politics of collegiality. In G. Yancy & M. Ethnic studies and public health professor, and CL@SE associate director Daniel López-Cevallos recently published his commentary, “Are Latino Immigrants a Burden to Safety Net Services in Nontraditional Immigrant States? Lessons From Oregon,” in The American Journal of Public Health.

Assistant Professor of anthropology Kenneth Maes recently published his commentary, “Listening to Community Health Workers: How Ethnographic Research Can Inform Positive Relationships Among Community Health Workers, Health Institutions, and Communities,” in The American Journal of Public Health.

Piano Instructor Matthew Goodrich recently edited “Integrative Alexander Technique Practice for Performing Artists: Onstage Synergy” by Cathy Madden. He submitted the final manuscript to Intellect Press (London) on February 17, for inclusion in their fall catalog. It should be on the shelf in January, 2015.

Jason Silveira, an assistant professor in the School of Arts and Communication, studies how our bodies and brains react to music. His project is one technology under development in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science’s CreateIT Collaboratory and was featured on the College of Engineering’s “Industry Connect” Blog in an entry titled Arts Meets Engineering by Abby Metzger.

Drum instructor and Jazz Band director Ryan Biesack has received a University Honors College course development grant to augment the History of Rock course he currently teaches, to include an experiential learning component, which will culminate in a student trip to Seattle’s Experience Music Project musieum of popular music and culture. This will most likely be offered as a 1 credit colloquia through the honors college in the Spring of 2015. He will also be traveling to Kathmandu, Nepal from March 19 through April 1 to perform and teach with an ensemble comprised of several University of Oregon and Willamette University colleagues. Biesack and the rest of this Oregon group will also be headlining the Sundance music festival outside of Kathmandu.
