Please attend a research presentation by Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies job candidate, Dr. Vanita Reddy, on Tues., Feb 11, 12:00 in MU 211. Dr. Reddy, currently an Assistant Professor of English at Texas A&M University, will present “Beyond Indo-Chic: Refashioning Diaspora.” Her research addresses politics of beauty, appearance, and race across the South Asian diaspora.

I’ve a Mother There: How Mormon Women Shaped Conceptions of the Mother in Heaven.  Feb. 11, 7:00 p.m., MU Journey Room.  In many Mormon communities, the Mother in Heaven is described as welcoming departed spirits back to the heavenly realm.  In this lecture, Susanna Morrill, Chair of the Religious Studies Department at Lewis and Clark College, will explore how early Mormon women writers helped to shape this present-day understanding of the Mother in Heaven.

Transformation without Apocalypse: How to Live Well on an Altered Planet,featuring Joanna Macy, Ursula K. LeGuin, Tim DeChristopher, Kim Stanley Robinson, Rob Nixon and other speakers. Fri., 9:00 a.m. – Sat., 9:30 p.m., LaSells Stewart Center. Humans will be living differently in the very near future, perhaps occasioned by catastrophes brought on by overpowering forces of greed and climatic disintegration. But it’s also conceivable that we will choose, by acts of imagination and collective will, to create new narratives of how to inhabit the planet. Due to last week’s weather, this event’s timeline has been changed to the following:  Fairbanks Gallery: Art, Only Part of the Story, an exhibit of large-scale drawings by Samantha Wall, opens February 17 in Fairbanks Gallery. There will be a reception for the artist, free and open to the public at 4:30, Wednesday, February 19. Wall, based in Portland, immigrated to the United States from Seoul, South Korea at the age of four. A person of mixed ethnicity, Wall examines the psychological spaces where the individual meets the group.

How I Learned to Drive– University Theatre presents Paula Vogel’s Pulitzer Prize winning play following the story of L’il Bit, a young girl growing up in rural Maryland. Center for the Humanities Guest Lecture: Drawing on a range of recent biographies in science including her own studies of scientists Jean Perrin, P.M.S. Blackett, and Michael Polanyi, Mary Jo Nye, Professor Emerita of History at OSU, will speak on “Biography and the History of Science,” Mon., Feb. 17 at 4:00 p.m. in the Autzen House, 811 S.W. Jefferson Avenue.

On 2/7, Horning Professor in the Humanities David Luft gave the keynote address of the Austrian Studies Association Conference in Austin, Tex.
