{"id":976,"date":"2011-05-09T18:56:25","date_gmt":"2011-05-10T01:56:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oregonstate.edu\/sustainability\/blog\/?p=976"},"modified":"2011-05-09T18:56:25","modified_gmt":"2011-05-10T01:56:25","slug":"winners-of-student-sustainability-writing-contest-announced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.blogs.oregonstate.edu\/ecologue\/2011\/05\/09\/winners-of-student-sustainability-writing-contest-announced\/","title":{"rendered":"Winners of student sustainability writing contest announced"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"font-size:10.0pt\"> <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size:10.0pt\">Five winning writers have been chosen for \u201cThe Great Work:  Re-imagining Humanity as the Planet Changes,\u201d the first annual  sustainability writing contest for Oregon State University students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:10.0pt\">OSU&#8217;s  Spring Creek Project and the Student Sustainability Initiative  sponsored the contest. Winners receive $100 and a chance to help shape  the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:10.0pt\">Charles  Goodrich, program director for the Spring Creek Project, said the  motivation for the contest is \u201cto encourage students to imagine new ways  of thinking about success, community, and happiness as climate  destabilization and declining cheap energy lead to environmental,  economic and social disruptions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:10.0pt\">\u201cWe  have some ideas about greener technology,\u201d said Goodrich, \u201cbut the  bigger challenge \u2013 imagining hopeful stories about better ways of human  thriving \u2013 has hardly begun.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-size:10.0pt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-979\" title=\"P4010049\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/ecologue\/files\/2011\/05\/P4010049.jpg\" alt=\"P4010049\" width=\"432\" height=\"324\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:10.0pt\">The  contest was funded by a grant from the OSU Student Sustainability  Initiative. Erin Harrington, graduate student in English and this year\u2019s  Spring Creek Project intern, wrote the grant proposal and directed the  contest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:10.0pt\">The writings will  appear in a forthcoming insert of the Daily Barometer, OSU\u2019s student-run  newspaper, to be published the week of May 16.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:10.0pt\">The winners are:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><span style=\"font-size:10.0pt\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">Alexis White, graduate student in MFA program from Portland, OR &#8211; winning piece: \u201cAnadromy\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">Dylan McDowell, freshman in education and fisheries and wildlife from Yachats, OR <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">&#8211;  winning piece: &#8220;Riding a Green Bike into a Greener Tomorrow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:10.0pt\">Gina Meredith, senior in liberal arts (OSU Cascades) from Bend, OR <\/span><strong><\/strong><span style=\"font-size:10.0pt\"> &#8211; winning piece: \u201cFruition\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><span style=\"font-size:10.0pt\"> Danielle White, senior in wood science and technology from Corvallis, OR &#8211; winning piece: \u201cBuffalo Road\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><span style=\"font-size:10.0pt\"> Rebecca Olson, graduate student in MFA program from Shoreview, Minn<strong>.<\/strong><\/span><strong><\/strong><span style=\"font-size:10.0pt\"> &#8211; winning piece: \u201cSubdivision\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">Media contact: Angela Yeager, <a href=\"541-737-0784\" target=\"_blank\">541-737-0784<\/a>; <a href=\"mailto:angela.yeager@oregonstate.edu\" target=\"_blank\">angela.yeager@oregonstate.edu<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">Source: Charles Goodrich, <a href=\"541-737-6198\" target=\"_blank\">541-737-6198<\/a>; <a href=\"mailto:charles.goodrich@oregonstate.edu\" target=\"_blank\">charles.goodrich@oregonstate.edu<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Five winning writers have been chosen for \u201cThe Great Work: Re-imagining Humanity as the Planet Changes,\u201d the first annual sustainability writing contest for Oregon State University students.
