The OSU ranking was partly based on the university’s location in Corvallis, which is known as the second most bike-friendly town in the nation. 97% of Corvallis’s streets have bike lanes, and more people (by percentage) take trips by bike in Corvallis than any other Oregon city. 30% of students bike to campus and bikers at OSU get to take advantage of bikes for sale in the university’s surplus property, free bike repair services, bike maps, and plenty of lockers for storage.

Earlier this year, the League of American Bicyclists designated OSU as a Bicycle Friendly University at the Silver level, based on fairly comprehensive report. Such a designation among hundreds of campuses which participate in the League’s report is rare. Reviewers of bike infrastructure, education, encouragement and planning were very pleased to see the commitment put into making OSU a great place for bicyclists. The report to the league gave OSU a chance to highlight its bike accommodation policy, its $380,000 investment in bike parking last year, campus-wide traffic calming, extensive encouragement (including pedicab service), the Bike Commute Challenge, its bike repair center, bi-annual utilization studies of bike facilities, and modal share (which illustrates a large percentage of travelers riding bikes or walking instead of driving). The report also helped those working for the Sustainability Office and those sitting on the Alternative Transportation Advisory Committee to understand areas which OSU can improve upon.
