It’s that time of year again. A chill is in the air, the leaves have all fallen and the Waste Warriors are gathering for another battle. It’s almost RecycleMania 2011!
RecycleMania is a nationwide recycling competition, which started in 2001 as a competition between two Ohio colleges and has since expanded to include over 600 universities in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Canada. OSU competes nationally as well as in a local civil war against the University of Oregon. This year the 10-week competition takes place January 23 through April 2 and the primary sponsors are Campus Recycling and the Student Sustainability Initiative.
Our goals this year? A) Have at least one activity every week – we want to provide you with lots of opportunities to be involved! B) Make this year more collaborative than ever before. We’re casting a wide net and are already in talks with groups such as the ASOSU, OSU Fashion Organization, Peer Health Advocates, Native American Longhouse, Black Cultural Center, Women’s Center and more to bring you events that are both informative and fun!
Mark your calendar now for our first event: the RecycleMania Kickoff Monday, January 24, in the Memorial Union Quad. This event will include a display of the amount of trash OSU produces, a dumpster audit (sorting OSU’s trash to see what could have been recycled or composted, as shown in the adjacent photo) and information about this year’s event lineup.
Other events in the works include the construction and display of a large structure made of recyclables, a compost workshop for departments, an e-waste collection event, “cash for clunkers” departmental fridge replacement program, Styrofoam/packaging collection event, a recycled fashion show, and more!
