Many professors and other experts say they\u2019re unreliable &#8212; they <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2016\/01\/11\/new-analysis-offers-more-evidence-against-student-evaluations-teaching\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">may hurt female and minority <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2016\/01\/11\/new-analysis-offers-more-evidence-against-student-evaluations-teaching\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">professors<\/a>, for example. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2016\/09\/21\/new-study-could-be-another-nail-coffin-validity-student-evaluations-teaching\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">One recent metastudy<\/a> also suggested that past analyses linking student achievement to strong evaluation scores are flawed, a mere \u201cartifact of small-sample-sized studies and publication bias.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now one of the authors of that metastudy is back for more, with a new analysis suggesting that SET ratings vary by course subject, with professors of math-related fields bearing the brunt of the effect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProfessors teaching quantitative courses are far more likely not to receive tenure, promotion and\/or merit pay when their performance is evaluated against common standards,\u201d reads the study, co-written by SET skeptic Bob Uttl, professor of psychology at Mount Royal University in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2017\/05\/10\/study-student-ratings-instructors-dependent-discipline-quantitative-fields-are-most\">Read the entire post here. \u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Student evaluations of teaching, or SET, aren\u2019t short on critics.
