May 23rd, 2013 is the Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00ed\u00a0\u00a0holiday of Declaration of the B\u00e1b.<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Historical Context<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Declaration of the B\u00e1b happened in May 1844 when a Shi’a Muslim,\u00a0Mull\u00e1 Husayn, was on a journey looking for the Promised One. The Promised One, also called\u00a0Al-Q\u0101\u02beim in the Shi’a tradition, is a messiah figure told about in holy scriptures.<\/p>\n

Mull\u00e1 Husayn\u00a0traveled to Shiraz, Iran where he was approached by a young stranger who invited Mull\u00e1 Husayn to his home. This young man’s name was Siyyid Ali Muhammad and was a direct descendent of the Prophet Muhammad through the lineage of both of his parents. Mull\u00e1 Husayn told Siyyid Ali Muhammad\u00a0that he was searching for the possible successor to Siyyid K\u00e1zim, the Promised One.<\/p>\n

This young man who was only 24 years old, told Mull\u00e1 Husayn that he was Siyyid K\u00e1zim’s successor and the bearer of divine knowledge. When Mull\u00e1 Husayn described the prophesies of The Promised One,\u00a0Ali Muhammad declared, “Behold, all of these signs are manifest in me.”<\/p>\n

Ali Muhammad then proceeded to explain the meanings of difficult holy teachings to\u00a0Mull\u00e1 Husayn and convinced him that he was the Promised One that Mull\u00e1 Husayn\u00a0had been searching for.\u00a0Ali Muhammad said, “O Thou who art the first to believe in Me! Verily, I say, I am the B\u00e1b, the Gate of God.”\u00a0Siyyid Ali Muhammad took the title of “The B\u00e1b,” which in Arabic means “the Gate.” He was the first of two prophetic figures who founded the Baha’i Faith, the other being Baha’u’llah, which in Arabic means “The Glory of God.”<\/p>\n

Modern Significance<\/strong><\/h3>\n
The Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00ed\u00a0faith quickly spread from that small room in Shiraz to more than 200 countries and territories around the world, representing diversity from all over the world. The writings of the\u00a0B\u00e1b quickly became the foundations for the new Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00ed\u00a0belief system which became an official religion later through the\u00a0Bah\u00e1’u’ll\u00e1h, the founder of the Bah\u00e1’\u00ed Faith, who was a follower of the B\u00e1b’s teachings.<\/div>\n

Bah\u00e1’\u00eds\u00a0claim that the B\u00e1b was also the spiritual return of\u00a0Elijah\u00a0and\u00a0John the Baptist, that he was the “Ush\u00eddar-M\u00e1h” referred to in the\u00a0Zoroastrian\u00a0scriptures,\u00a0and that he was the forerunner of their own religion.<\/div>\n

The declaration of the\u00a0B\u00e1b is one of the nine holy days in the\u00a0Bah\u00e1’\u00ed calendar.<\/div>\n

    OSU Religious\u00a0Accommodation\u00a0Policy<\/h3>\n

    It is the policy of the Oregon University System and Oregon State University that no one shall be subject to discrimination based on age, disability, national origin, race, color, veteran status, marital status, religion, sex or sexual orientation.<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n
