I shall follow God&#8217;s path. God is neither Hindu nor Mussulman and the path which I follow is God&#8217;s.&#8221; \u00a0This is a fundamental belief of Sikhs, that there is a supreme God that manifests in all major religions.<\/p>\n<p>Guru Nanak&#8217;s teaching is understood to be practiced in three ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em><a title=\"Va\u1e47\u1e0d Chakk\u014d\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Va%E1%B9%87%E1%B8%8D_Chakk%C5%8D\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Va\u1e47\u1e0d\u00a0Chakk\u014d<\/span><\/a><\/em>: \u00a0S<\/span>haring with others, helping those with less who are in need<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em><a title=\"Kirat Kar\u014d\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kirat_Kar%C5%8D\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Kirat Kar\u014d<\/span><\/a><\/em>: \u00a0E<\/span>arning\/making a living honestly, without exploitation or fraud<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em><a title=\"Naam Japna\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Naam_Japna\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Naam Japna<\/span><\/a><\/em>: \u00a0C<\/span>hanting the Holy Name and thus remembering God at all times (ceaseless devotion to God)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>In 1499, Guru Nanak was moved by seeing suffering in the world and set out to spread a message of peace and compassion. \u00a0Guru Nanak is famous for his five journeys across Asia, spreading his Divine message.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rituals\/Traditions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Singing hymns<\/li>\n<li>A huge procession, beginning at\u00a0Gurdwara Nankana Sahib, Pakistan, the birthplace of Guru Nanak<\/li>\n<li>Swordsmanship and various martial arts to demonstrate mock battles<\/li>\n<li>Flags and flowers are displayed<\/li>\n<li>Early morning Katha, exposition of Sikh scriptures<\/li>\n<li>A community lunch that welcomes all, regardless of caste<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrations in the spirit of seva (service) and bhakti (devotion)<\/li>\n<li>Sunset prayer sessions that last into the late night until 1:20am, the actual time of Guru Nanak&#8217;s birth<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_163\" class=\"wp-caption thumbnail alignleft\" style=\"width: 616px;\">\n    <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/deanofstudents\/files\/2012\/11\/guru-nanak-jayanti.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-163\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/deanofstudents\/files\/2012\/11\/guru-nanak-jayanti.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"616\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/775\/files\/2012\/11\/guru-nanak-jayanti.jpeg 616w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/775\/files\/2012\/11\/guru-nanak-jayanti-300x137.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 616px) 100vw, 616px\" \/><\/a>\n    <figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Happy Gurpurab!<\/figcaption>\n    <\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>Additional Resources<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>Due to the political unrest in Pakistan, there is some tension about permitting Sikh&#8217;s entry to their traditional place of celebration for this holiday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.indianexpress.com\/news\/police-banned-entry-of-sikhs-to-haridwar-say-devotees\/1036817\/0\">http:\/\/www.indianexpress.com\/news\/police-banned-entry-of-sikhs-to-haridwar-say-devotees\/1036817\/0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A video of Sikh pilgrims to celebrate in 2011<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rxk-2PWTpBM\">http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rxk-2PWTpBM\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/in.news.yahoo.com\/citys-sikhs-prepare-guru-nanak-jayanti-183000129.html\">http:\/\/in.news.yahoo.com\/citys-sikhs-prepare-guru-nanak-jayanti-183000129.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newkerala.com\/news\/newsplus\/worldnews-106495.html#.ULWentPjnbk\">http:\/\/www.newkerala.com\/news\/newsplus\/worldnews-106495.html#.ULWentPjnbk<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newkerala.com\/news\/newsplus\/worldnews-106495.html#.ULWentPjnbk\">http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/mike-ghouse\/sikhs-and-muslims-on-542n_b_1087327.html\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/mike-ghouse\/sikhs-and-muslims-on-542n_b_1087327.html\">\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This blogpost series is called Holidays and Holy Days to inform our OSU community about significant religious or spiritual observances.\u00a0 If you know of a significant holiday or holy day coming up, please communicate the information to Hannah Pynn\u00a0hannah.pynn@oregonstate.edu\u00a0in the Dean of Student Life office.
