2015 Earth Day of Service

Registration is open now for the 2015 Earth Day of Service through the OSU Center for Civic Engagement, Saturday April 18.

Projects include:

Benton County Natural Areas and Parks: Time: 8am-12:30pm. Project Description: Pulling ivy in North Albany Park and participating in an ivy pulling contest for a Park Prize! Capacity: 11 volunteers. Youth welcome.

SOLVE/Corvallis Parks and Recreation: Time:8:15am-12:00pm. Project Description: Invasive species removal, litter cleanup, planting native plants and trees, and pruning/maintenance. Capacity: 25 volunteers. Bike to site option. Youth welcome.

Produce for the People: Time: 8:30am-12:15pm. Project Description: Moving leaves and compost, greenhouse transplanting, and other garden work. Capacity: 40 volunteers. Bike to site option. Youth welcome.

SAGE Garden: Time: 9:15am-2pm. Project Description: Harvesting, weeding, planting, garden clean up, path maintenance. Capacity: 40 volunteers. Bike to site option. Youth welcome.

Ocean Blue Project: Time: 10:20am-2pm. Project Description: Working along the banks of Mill Race Stream, invasive species removal, native vegetation planting, litter removal, and erosion control. Capacity: 12 volunteers. Youth welcome

Study Abroad Scholarships

In commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Mobility International USA (MIUSA) and the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) are partnering up to provide 25 scholarships for students with disabilities to study abroad.

Scholarship applications for these study abroad opportunities are due by April 1, 2015, so visit http://www.ciee.org/study-abroad/miusa/ if you are interested in applying.

Civic Engagement Week is February 23 to 28, 2015!

Civic Engagement is about demonstrating care for people, our communities, and the environment and place we share; it is working towards creating a better quality of life for all. Students can make a difference through community service, leadership, learning about social issues, and advocating for change.

Join the Center for Civic Engagement for a series of events to build community, learn from local nonprofits, and to celebrate and appreciate what OSU students and local agencies are doing to better campus and our greater Corvallis community. Explore the many aspects of civic engagement and how you can make a difference!

ASOSU Accessibility Task Force Needs Members

Are you interested in having a voice on campus? Are there accessibility needs that you feel aren’t being met? If so, the ASOSU Director of Accessibility Affairs is forming a task force of students who want to advocate for accessibility on campus. Volunteer at the Day of Caring

If you’re looking for a great opportunity to volunteer, look no further! The Center for Civic Engagement has opened registration for the Day of Caring, Friday May 30th. They have asked to have the following message distributed throughout the OSU community:

“Registration for Day of Caring Service Projects on Friday May 30th is now OPEN! Students, staff, and faculty are invited to participate in this day of service. Choose from 14 different service projects with 12 community partners. Projects will take place at various times in the afternoon and check-in will be on campus at the Dixon lower courts, with transportation provided from there.  The Center for Civic Engagement is partnering with the United Way of Benton & Lincoln Counties to host this event.  Work will include options ranging from outdoor park cleanups and invasive species removal to community garden maintenance to facility cleanup, crafting, program preparation, home building, and much more! Many projects can accommodate children and youth as well.

Research Participants Needed

Be Active, Work Safe is part of a research project being conducted by Drs. Laurel Kincl and Simon Driver at Oregon State University.

They need participants to help review the usability and accessibility of an online program aimed at increasing the physical activity and workplace safety for people with a disability.

Participants should meet the following qualifications:

  • Are 18-65 years of age
  • Have a physical disability
  • Are receiving services at OSU DAS
  • Are able to communicate in English
  • Have access to a computer and the internet

Wednesday February 5th, 2014 from 12pm-3pm is the 2014 Non-Profit & Volunteer Fair! Breakout sessions will run at 11am and 12pm. Refreshments provided!

Join us for the 8th Annual Nonprofit & Volunteer Fair! Meet representatives from over 50 local and national nonprofit and government organizations representing a wide variety of fields who are seeking OSU volunteers, interns, and employees. Network with people who share your interests and passions and learn more about the many opportunities available in the nonprofit and public service fields. 

The Nonprofit & Volunteer Fair is sponsored by the Center for Civic Engagement and Career Services.

 

Where: OSU Memorial Union Ballroom

When: Wednesday, February 5th, 2014, 12pm to 3pm, 10am and 11am breakout session. Refreshments provided in the MU Ballroom.

10:00AM – 11:00AM: Pursuing a Nonprofit Career, MU Journey Room: Gain insight into the nonprofit industry. This session will include basics about nonprofit organizations and how to be best prepared for pursing a nonprofit career.

11:00AM – 12:00PM Marketing Your Service Experience, MU 206: Meet a panel of nonprofit professionals who will share tips and strategies on marketing your service and volunteer experience to potential employers and answer your questions about the nonprofit field. This panel will include representatives from six nonprofit agencies at entry level and senior level positions.

11:00AM – 12:00PM International Service, MU 208: Explore international nonprofit service and internships opportunities both during and after college.

Get involved with psychology research on disability!

The Disability and Social Interaction Lab, headed by Dr. Kathleen Bogart, examines the way people adapt to disability (e.g. facial paralysis, mobility disability) and the way others form impressions about them. Dr. Bogart is seeking undergraduate and graduate students for her lab to assist with research. Students with disabilities are encouraged to apply.

This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience with psychology research for graduate school or future employment.  Students can earn course credit or volunteer in the lab. To learn more about the research, go to: http://oregonstate.edu/cla/psych_science/bogart.

A New Way to Spend Spring Break

Register now for a great way to see a new place, make new friends, and make a difference!

 

Alternative breaks are a fun way for students to participate in community service projects in places around the country and around the world. This year, three trips are being sponsored by OSU’s Center for Civic Engagement:

 

Hunger & Homelessness:   San Francisco, California                  

 

Explore homelessness issues in major urban areas. Provide service work such as preparing and serving meals. Students will also complete indirect service projects, such as facility improvements and assisting organizations prepare for fundraisers. Spend time learning about San Francisco and all the city has to offer.

 

Community & Cultural Engagement: Yakima, Washington           

 

Discover the cultures of the Yakima Valley. Work with new migrant workers with their English language skills, help at afterschool children’s programs or work the land. Visit the Yakama Nation Cultural Heritage Center and learn how the area’s history has influenced its people.

 

Environmental  Restoration & Conservation: Ashland, Oregon    

 

Learn about conservation and restoration issues in Ashland, OR. Get hands-on experience participating in restoration projects, meet with local environmental leaders, and learn about the ways humans impact local ecosystems. This trip gets physical – some labor and lots of hiking around outdoors. Bring your rain gear!
