Feral cat spay and neuter clinic

May 24th, 2011

On Sunday, May 15, members of the OSU CVM Shelter Medicine Club and the Pre-veterinary Medical Association (PVMA) at OSU collaborated to help run a feral cat spay and neuter clinic. These clinics provide one of the only opportunities for neutering feral cats in the Corvallis area, and are made possible by the Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon (www.feralcats.com), which has a portable veterinary clinic that provides these services in various cities. Veterinary and pre-veterinary students organize the clinics, including recruitment of volunteers and registering the cats. At the last clinic, 76 cats were neutered.

Soggy Pet Day

May 9th, 2011

Taking off at the start of the Fun Run.

The 24th Annual Pet Day and Open House began with intermittent rain showers and downpours that continued throughout the day. Shortly after 9 a.m. and in spite of the inclement weather, over a hundred runners in three divisions were unleashed at the starting line across from Magruder Hall. Many ran or walked with their leashed four-legged companions. For results in the Basset Hound, Retriever and Greyhound divisions, click here.

Sixty-six booths offered a variety of interest: pet health information and samples, animal adoption, llama and goat demonstrations, a talented terrier performing numerous tricks, dog agility, a Frisbee dog competition, a visit to the anatomy lab, a variety of reptiles on display, a petting zoo, and pony rides just to name a few.

Pet Day is organized and orchestrated by the first- and second-year veterinary students at the College of Veterinary Medicine. Ten incoming students from the Class of 2015 volunteered their time. Students in the OSU Pre-Veterinary Medicine Association held a “Cow Pie Bingo” event.

Judges had the difficult task of selecting winners in the Cat Photo Contest. See the winners here.

Pet Day was well recorded. You are welcome to view hundreds of photographs on our website. Here is just a sampling: Read the rest of this entry »

Last month was a very special time for Dr. V. She was invited to give a conference in Tel Aviv, Israel, by afimilk®, the company that developed state-of-the-art technology that is used for telemetric monitoring of dairy cattle all around the world. The conference gathered 86 attendants from 37 countries — all five continents. Dr. V’s presentation was very well received, and started some interesting conversations. During the conference, she had the opportunity to connect with veterinarians, farmers and other people who are as enthusiastic about the system as she is.
