Class of 2001 celebrates 10-year reunion

September 13th, 2011

Dr. Jilinda Lewis-Simpson reported that the Class of 2001 held their 10-year reunion in July in Corvallis.  She said, “It was a great event to catch up on 10-years’ worth of happenings from all our class-mates! We got a tour (and did a bit of drooling) of all the changes that have been happening to the school — the young whipper-snappers have it so good!! There have been amazing advancements in the care and teaching provided for our Oregon students and future colleagues.”

Dr. Lewis-Simpson added, “Ten years after vet school I’m happy to report that all members of our graduating class of 34 are still practicing veterinary medicine!” (see more photos) Read the rest of this entry »

Fracture fixed after jump from second-story window

August 11th, 2011

Smokey

Smokey, a 4-year-old retired racing greyhound, was settling in as the beloved new member of the Arthenayake family, when, for unknown reasons, she jumped through second story window of her new home. Smokey’s family rushed her to their veterinarian, Dr. Roberta Porter (Class of 2008) at Alpine Animal Hospital. Dr. Porter stabilized Smokey, and after diagnosing a wrist fracture, transferred Smokey to the Small Animal Orthopedic Surgery service at Oregon State University. The OSU Orthopedic Surgery Service serves to diagnose, treat and teach about injuries and developmental disorders of the musculoskeletal system in dogs and cats. Some of the special services offered by OSU Orthopedics include fracture repair, stabilization of joint, tendon and ligament injury, minimally invasive surgery, arthroscopy, correction of limb deformity, disk surgery, and total elbow and hip joint replacement. Interested in visiting France while learning research techniques?

August 11th, 2011

I recommend this option if you speak French

In February of 2011 I was excited to receive an email from Dr. Luiz Bermudez detailing a summer research opportunity in Toulouse, France. The program was exactly what I was looking for. It would allow a student to gain research experience while living abroad and learning about another culture. I applied for the position and was fortunate enough to be selected. Over the next few months I spent many hours planning out the experience with CVM and researchers/administrators at Ecole Nationale Vétérinaire de Toulouse (ENVT).

A few days after completing my finals I left for France to begin the project. Unfortunately, I resigned from my position after only one week due to a family issue. I felt an enormous sense of disappointment, as many people invested a lot of time, effort and money into creating the research partnership. While I was only at ENVT for one week, I feel as though I learned a great deal during my time there and throughout the planning process. I hope to detail a few things that may be beneficial to any future students who choose to work a summer at the veterinary school in Toulouse. Read the rest of this entry »
