Pfizer hosts tailgate brunch

First-year students showed their OSU spirit by coming to the Pfizer Animal Health Tailgate Brunch hosted by Dr. Rocky Bigbie and his associates prior to the OSU vs UCLA football game on Sept. 24.

Pregame entertainment was provided by the OSU marching band as it passed by Magruder Hall on its way to the stadium.

AAHA site visit a success

“We passed!” exclaimed Hospital Director Dr. Helen Diggs.  The triennial American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) accreditation site visit took place September 8 and was an overwhelming success. Six hospital services were individually evaluated as part of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital’s AAHA accreditation: Small Animal Medicine, Small Animal Surgery, Oncology, Cardiology, Anesthesiology, and Diagnostic Imaging. Other hospital support areas reviewed were the Drug Room, Central Sterile, Small Animal Reception. Additionally, documentation of an effective working relationship with the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory was assessed.

Continuing Education series begins Wednesday, Sept. 14

Milan Milovancev, DVM, MS, DACVS, will present the first of the CE series for DVMs with his course “Canine laryngeal paralysis: More than upper airway.” The fall and spring series will have ten courses through June 2012 offered at 1.5 credits each. Cost is $20 per course with Pfizer Animal Health helping to sponsor refreshments. Call 541-737-2268 to register.

Dr. Tornquist helps in Liberia

Dr. Sue Tornquist recently returned from a 3-week project in Liberia with Veterinarians Without Borders. She was one of a team of three veterinarians and one veterinary student on the trip. The project included a week of training Community Animal Health Workers in Zorzor, in northern Liberia, and a week of training university agriculture students in diagnostic laboratory techniques in Gbarnga in central Liberia. In addition, the team met with a number of local non-government organizations about potential further collaborations and met with the Minister of Agriculture regarding developmental plans for rebuilding Liberia’s agriculture infrastructure.

Orientation begins for the Class of 2015

The Class of 2015 will be welcomed to the College of Veterinary Medicine with orientation Wednesday through Friday, September 21-23. There are 56 students entering their first year of veterinary medicine.

In 2011 Dr. Laird Goodman, OVMA president-elect, presented a stethoscope to Giovanna Coto, class of 2014.

Orientation culminates with the White Coat Ceremony and dinner Friday evening. The incoming students will receive their white coats and stethoscopes courtesy of the Oregon Veterinary Medical Association.

 

The CVM Dairy Barn gets a face lift

September 13th, 2011

A new coat of paint in 2010 gave a refreshing new look to the old dairy barn on SW Washington Way. But the roof was deteriorating and the historic structure was in danger. Under blue skies in August, workers stripped off the old roof and replaced it with sheathing and roofing tiles.
