Dr. Susan Tornquist, CVM Associate Dean, is serving on a committee to select a senior graduate student, or a veterinarian in a residency program at OSU that includes research at the masters or doctoral level as part of the program, as the 2011-12 recipient of the Robert and Clarice MacVicar Animal Health Fund Scholar Award. The award will be made as a $5000 stipend, with an additional $1000 for research supplies and/or travel. Nominations of candidates should be made by faculty through their department chairs/heads and sent electronically to Debrah Rarick.
WVC scholarship recipient announced
October 10th, 2011The Western Veterinary Conference (WVC) announced that it will provide a $1,000 scholarship to a third-year veterinary student at each of the 33 accredited North American veterinary colleges. Additionally, students will receive complimentary registration including travel and daily stipend to attend the 2012 Western Veterinary Conference in Las Vegas, Nev., February 19-23.
Sami Pederson, class of 2013, was selected by the OSU CVM Scholarship Committee for her scholastic aptitude, financial need and her potential to assume leadership roles later in her career.
In response, Sami commented, “As a third year student, I’m thrilled and honored to be selected as an attendee for this years’ Western Veterinary Conference. Involvement in OSU CVM organizations such as the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), Zoo, Wildlife and Exotics (ZWE), Ag Animal, and International Veterinary Student Association (IVSA) has shown me the diverse levels of care and services available to animals in our own country and others. This opportunity for lectures, labs, and networking will greatly augment my interest in leadership and desire to make positive and sustainable impacts in the veterinary world.”
Congratulations, Sami!

All College BBQ: Food, Games, and Families
October 10th, 2011The horse arena at OSU smelled like chicken last month as nearly 240 students, staff, faculty, and their families enjoyed barbecued chicken with all the fixin’s at the annual CVM All-College barbecue sponsored by Nestle Purina.
Also filling the arena were CVM student organizations who displayed colorful posters, sold T-shirts, and chatted with students as they lined up to get their plates and utensils. Associate Dean, Dr. Sue Tornquist, handed out game sheets for the Know Your Neighbor competition. Liz Harbert from large animal reception won the prize for collecting the most autographs from the Class of 2015. Jill Ollivant, Class of 2015, won the prize for collecting the most autographs from everyone else. Dr. Tornquist created the game to help the Class of 2015 get to know people from across the college.
New MRI Improves Treatment
September 27th, 2011A new MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scanner at the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine enables clinicians in the Lois Bates Acheson Teaching Hospital to conduct sophisticated imaging of an animal’s internal organs, spinal cord, ligaments and tissues. The instrument was donated by Stan and Judy Stearns who were the honored guests at a dedication ceremony for the new facility on Friday, Sept. 23. The MRI will be used for dogs, cats, and other small animals and will assist clinicians to better diagnose and prescribe treatment.
Stan and Judy Stearns are the founders of the non-profit The Gabriel Institute whose purpose is to support research to find a cure for canine bone cancer. The Stearns also hope that the tools and knowledge developed by the institute will ultimately benefit children who are diagnosed with bone cancer.
The Gabriel Institute is named in honor of the Stearn’s beloved Saint Bernard, Gabe who was treated for bone cancer by the OSU Veterinary Hospital in 2007.

Leadership Training Inspires New Students
September 27th, 2011On a gorgeous fall day in Corvallis, 56 students gathered on the lawn in front of Magruder Hall to participate in leadership activities as part of a three-day, new student orientation. To the casual observer, some the outdoor lessons might have looked like a lot of fun but they had a serious purpose: teaching students to be role models, team players, and leaders in their profession. In fact, the full day of leadership training was intense; as one student described it, “We laughed, we cried, we learned a lot.”
