One Health One World Fundraiser

January 17th, 2012

Penny Drive DisplayOnce again students, faculty, and staff at the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine opened their hearts and wallets to those in need. The annual One Health One World fundraiser at CVM held breakfast sales, cat toy sales, and a penny drive competition between the faculty and each class at CVM. The penny drive alone raised $939.89 for the Pine Ridge and Warm Springs Indian Reservations. You can see the table buckling under the weight of all that generosity ( left).

The penny drive competition was very close with the class of 2014 taking first place. This was despite a last minute strategic move by the class of 2013 who added 100 penny rolls in 2 large bags.

The goal of the annual fundraiser is to highlight an area of the world in need, and understand the intertwined plight of the humans and animals that live there. At Pine Ridge, donations will be put towards the Rural Veterinary Experience, Teaching and Service Program (RVETS) and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Community Health Program. At Warm Springs, the organizations supported are the OSU RVP Warm Springs Equine Castration Program and the Warm Springs Health and Wellness Center.

Kudos to the student organizations who worked hard organizing the events: SCAVMA, AAFP, Shelter Medicine, VBMA, AAEP, ZWE and Class of 2014 and 2015.

Behind the Scenes at the Aquarium

January 12th, 2012

Dr. Dan Lewer checks on a rhinocerus auklet with arthritis while members of the OSU ZWE Club look on.

On a blustery January day, eight students from the Zoo, Wildlife and Exotics Student Club (ZWE) stood outside a big cement tank surrounded by chain link fence. Inside the fence were several sea otters having their fishy breakfast.

The tank is a holding area for Oregon Aquarium sea otters with health issues. Dr. Dan Lewer, a veterinarian at Animal Medical Care of Newport, Oregon, (and a 2008 OSU graduate) is a consultant at the aquarium and he took ZWE members on a tour of his recent cases.

Aialik is a young sea otter who came to the aquarium after being orphaned off the coast of Alaska. Soon after arriving, Aialik become ill and Lewer diagnosed a blocked bladder. Needless to say, veterinarians don’t operate on sea otters everyday so Lewer and his colleague, Dr. Steve Brown, had to adapt procedures used on goats and horses to surgically remove the bladder stones. Unfortunately, the problem kept returning and eventually Lewer inserted a permanent catheter.  Ashley Briese, co-president of the ZWE Club found this case the most interesting part of her visit to the aquarium. “Aialik’s issues started back in 2009,” she says, “They did numerous surgeries to unblock him. He has a permanent catheter and marsupialized bladder that now grows crystals on it. It is pretty amazing, high technology medicine that has never been tried on a sea otter before.”

Professor Leads Change at National Org

December 19th, 2011

Professor Jean HallMost people are familiar with human medical specialists like cardiologists and dermatologists. But very few members of the general public know there are specialists in veterinary medicine as well. Jean Hall, Chairman of the board of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) and an OSU Professor, is working to change that. “Part of our objective at ACVIM is to educate the public,” she says. “Our affiliated foundation is raising money to promote specialists. General veterinarians provide excellent care but there may be tests or equipment or expertise that they don’t have.”

The ACVIM is a national non-profit organization that certifies veterinary specialists in cardiology, oncology, neurology, and internal medicine. Currently in her fourth year of service with the organization, Hall has been instrumental in a large-scale reorganization of the ACVIM to make it more responsive to member’s needs. Most recently, she led a search committee that hired a dynamic new CEO who will implement many new initiatives set by the governing board. “She has lots of experience running organizations,” Hall says, “and is well poised to lead us to the next level.”

Hall is excited about the new initiatives on the table. In addition to ramping up promotion of veterinary specialists, the ACVIM is planning to become a resource center for members. “We want to help them with advertising and marketing,” she says. “It makes sense not to recreate the wheel for each practice, and if we band together, we get strength in numbers.” The ACVIM also plans to provide help with technical, licensing, and legal questions.

Another new initiative underway at the ACVIM is in response to practicing veterinarians who have expressed an interest in being involved in research. The organization is investigating ways to connect veterinarians, who see a vast number of animal cases and have a wealth of real-world knowledge, with university researchers who have the tools and research expertise.

Hall acknowledges that her work with the ACVIM has put a dent in her personal life but she goes into her last year of service with a real sense of accomplishment. “I love to go into organizations and make them better. Where some people are better at tackling day-to-day details, I think I offer an ability to envision the future. I am honored to have been asked to serve.”
