Student Selected for Coveted Scholarship

April 26th, 2013

The Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship is awarded to only 18 veterinary students across the United States each year. “We do not recruit applicants,” says Staff Sergeant David Barnett. “We have many hundreds of students who apply.” This year CVM student Jake Tidwell was one of the deserving recipients.

Tidwell went through a rigorous process of two applications, one for the army and one for the scholarship program. He also had to submit letters of recommendation from veterinarians. As a scholarship recipient, the army will pay for his next two years of vet school and include a monthly stipend. He will also receive reimbursement for books and supplies.

IVSA Extends Animal Care Across the Globe

April 25th, 2013

The OSU International Veterinary Students Association has been very busy over the last few months.  We started out the school year with the very successful Run for Ukraine in October followed up by OHOW week in January.  In winter term we awarded scholarships to Nicaragua 2012 participants, and the term was rounded out by our annual silent auction.  Plans for the 2013 trip to Nicaragua are well under way; applications were received and approved in January.  The 2013 Nicaragua participants began their required seminars on April 2nd; those will continue through spring term.  Representatives from our IVSA group attended the tenth annual Western Regional International Health Conference at OHSU at the beginning of April and there is more IVSA fun to come.  Don’t forget the International Food Fest coming sometime in May!

On October 14th IVSA held The Run for Ukraine.  This event received a lot of community support and raised $785 that will be used to further veterinary care in our sister city of Uzhgorod, Ukraine and assist the community of Ukraine with healthcare for their citizens suffering with tuberculosis.  Currently, Uzhgorod does not have an animal shelter, the community hopes to put these funds toward the effort of establishing one.

A Gift For the Little Guys

April 25th, 2013

Danny Noble has spent a lot of time at the OSU Large Animal Hospital this past year, receiving treatment and corrective farrier work for his laminitis.  A mini horse who loves people, Danny, and his owner Chris, have become part of the College of Vet Med family. And because he knows everyone and likes to socialize, the staff at the hospital always set his stall up with a little gate he can look out over.

Now, thanks to a generous donation from Chris Noble, other mini horses and ponies with outgoing personalities will also be able to see what is going on around them. Chris donated a second mini-gate to the hospital for other little equines who might be getting treatment at the same time as Danny.

See related story in the Spring edition of Animal Connection.
