Rama, a 30-year-old Asian elephant at the Oregon Zoo, has tested positive for tuberculosis, the first ever instance of the disease in the zoo’s herd.
The zoo routinely tests all its elephants for TB by taking an annual trunk culture as part of its comprehensive health program and in compliance with U.S. Department of Agriculture standards.
The International Camelid Health Conference (ICHC) will be held at Magruder Hall in Corvallis on July 11- 14, 2013. The conference is the premier gathering of veterinarians interested in camelid health care and is a combination of state-of-the-art research abstracts, reports, and comprehensive reviews.
This conference is suitable for veterinarians with all levels of experiences with camelids.
The American Animal Hospital Association’s 2012 State of the Industry Report contained some positive news this year. They found that revenue for companion animal practices rose a mean 5.6 percent between 2011 and 2012.
Dr. Mike Cavanaugh, AAHA Executive Director, noted that hospitals reporting growth greater than ten percent were those who ‘believe their growth is independent of the economy’ and who ‘took growth into their own hands.’
The report also found that location and practice size were not factors in growth.

Researchers at the University of Arizona have found that dog’s bodies release a chemical similar to one found in marijuana when they run for a prolonged period of time.
David Raichlen and his team studied endocannabinoids and found that “a neurobiological reward for endurance exercise may explain why humans and other cursorial mammals habitually engage in aerobic exercise.”
