One-Health-One-World Symposium in April

January 19th, 2011

The OSU International Veterinary Students’ Association (IVSA) will host the first annual One-Health-One-World Service Symposium on April 8–10, 2011. The mission of the symposium is to promote the value and explore the potential of health professionals and students in international service, with a focus on veterinary medicine. Veterinarians, health professionals and students are invited to attend.

Today, there is an ever-increasing awareness that animal health, human health, and the environment are intimately linked. This is evident in the collaboration of the AVMA and the American Medical Association (www.onehealthinitiative.com) and in the new alignment of the College of Veterinary Medicine, the College of Pharmacy, and the College of Health and Human Sciences into the Division of Health Sciences.

Veterinarians may not choose to work internationally but clients and the general American public expect them to have a working knowledge of current global health issues. The One-Health-One World Service Symposium addresses these issues.  The weekend will consist of lectures, case studies and various opportunities for students and professionals to discuss and generate ideas for promotion of service work in the international setting. Speakers include: Dr. Thomas Ward, Emerging Zoonoses; Dr. Richard Bachman, The Evolution of International Service; Drs. Hernán Montilla and Jorge Vanegas, The Importance of Flexibility and Improvisation in Rural Practice and Practical Skills in the Field; Dr. Luiz Bermudez, Education in the Field Setting and Tales from an African Medical Clinic; and Dr. Jay Kravitz, Global Health and Professional Collaboration. An international food festival will conclude Saturday’s activities.

For more information and registration, visit the IVSA website:  http://oregonstate.edu/groups/ivsa/symposium.htm.

Student tour guides enlighten visitors

January 19th, 2011

The OSU College of Veterinary Medicine offers the service of providing tours of the Lois Bates Acheson Veterinary Teaching Hospital to visitors. Because this is a working facility, students are trained as guides to take guests on tours through the halls of the small animal and large animal clinics and the anatomy lab. They give up their lunch time at noon to cheerfully and proudly show off their College. Tours are prearranged by calling or emailing the College.

Starting in the main lobby, the tour takes about an hour. When large groups are touring, they are split up into smaller guided groups. The guides are responsible for instructing visitors on the proper protocol during the tour, keeping the group together and preventing hospital patients from being touched or photographed.

As the tour progresses, the guides stop and point out items of interest, from the sculptured wall in the lobby to the specialized areas in the hospital, such as surgery suites, diagnostic imaging and rehabilitation, and on into the necropsy gallery and lecture rooms. While some of these areas cannot be entered, visitors are able to experience the atmosphere and organization of the College from the detailed explanation given by the tour guide.

Not including Pet Day, 87 tours were given during 2010 with most of them taking place during the summer months. The majority of visitors were high school and middle school students who came in groups of up to 60 at a time. Other interested groups were the Albany Fire Department, 4H and other club members, alumni and prospective students and their families.

By far the largest number of visitors took advantage of the on-going tours that were offered all day during the annual Pet Day and Open House event. This year Pet Day, one of the most popular annual spring events on campus, will take place on April 30. Drawing some 3,000 to 4,000 visitors, Pet Day is coordinated by veterinary students. Numerous booths are staffed by vendors, volunteers and clubs who provide information on animal health and wellness, nutrition, adoption and therapy. Other booths and displays feature llamas, goats, ferrets, wildlife rehabilitation and reptiles.

Alumnus Shawn Thomas sees need, opens clinic

January 19th, 2011

—Special to The Oregonian by Eric Apalategui

A week after Tanasbourne Veterinary-Emergency opened, New Year’s Eve passed quietly at the only emergency pet clinic in the Hillsboro and Beaverton area that’s open all night, every weekend and major holidays.

Dr. Shawn Thomas, the clinic’s owner and only staff veterinarian, designed and with the help of friends and family built out the clinic, which he filled with state-of-the-art diagnostic and surgical equipment. All of it sat idle on this particular night, as he sipped a chai latte from Insomnia Coffee Co. next door in a small shopping center just off Northeast Cornell Road and waited for a dog or cat that needed quick care.

“You know there’s emergencies this weekend,” Thomas said.

But most local pet owners haven’t yet heard about his new clinic, so they drive to the Emergency Veterinary Clinic of Tualatin or DoveLewis Emergency Animal Hospital in Northwest Portland.

Several nights since New Year’s Eve have been busier, Thomas said. The lack of patients bothers him not so much from a business standpoint as because it means some pet owners might not get their animals to clinics quickly.

“It just pulls on your heartstrings,” he said. “It’s needed out here.”  Read more…
