Dr. Brianna Beechler awarded MAF fellowship

April 12th, 2011

Dr. Brianna Beechler with darted African buffalo.

Brianna Beechler, a PhD student in the Jolles lab in Biomedical Sciences, was awarded a Morris Animal Foundation Fellowship to support her work on disease interactions in African buffalo. The fellowship, worth over $80,000, will provide her with stipend and tuition for two years.

After completing her DVM degree at OSU in the spring of 2008, Brianna joined the Jolles lab in the fall. Her doctoral dissertation research in Kruger National Park (KNP), South Africa, is investigating how an invasive disease, bovine tuberculosis (BTB), affects the dynamics of a native infection, Rift Valley Fever (RVF), in African buffalo.

Bovine tuberculosis, caused by Mycobacterium bovis, was introduced to Kruger National Park in the 80s and is spreading northwards in the park through the buffalo population. A detailed understanding of the BTB invasion in Kruger Park is particularly urgent due to the creation of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area, linking national parks (Kruger in South Africa, Gonarezhou in Zimbabwe and Limpopo in Mozambique) and opening the previously closed Kruger ecosystem to animal migrations across a much larger area. Both M. bovis and Rift Valley Fever are capable of infecting multiple host species, including cattle and humans. Outbreaks of RVF occur frequently around Kruger National Park, with human and livestock deaths a common problem. Movement of BTB in buffalo to currently unaffected areas will potentially put rural livelihoods, as well as more fragile wildlife species at risk. This concern has motivated research on BTB in African buffalo; yet how BTB may affect RVF infection dynamics remains unknown.

It is possible that infection with bovine tuberculosis may allow for increased incidence of infection with RVF, possibly increasing the spread of RVF from buffalo to livestock and humans. By examining RVF and BTB dynamics in their main wildlife host, Bree hopes to contribute to understanding and potentially mitigating the risks that these diseases pose to wildlife, livestock and people.

MacVicar Scholar Award presentation

Dr. Beechler is the 2010 recipient of the MacVicar Scholar Award. She will give her lecture on Wednesday, April 20, at 3 p.m. in 102 Magruder Hall. The title is “Disease invasion, multiparasite interactions and conservation: Rift Valley Fever and bovine tuberculosis in African buffalo in Kruger National Park, South Africa.” There will be a reception.

SAVMA Symposium 2011

April 12th, 2011

The 2011 SAVMA Symposium took place March 24—26 at the University of California-Davis. Proximity and timing (Symposium is rarely during our spring break, most other schools are on the semester system) meant that OSU had an opportunity to have a large contingent make the trip. With more than 40 students attending in Beaver orange hooded sweatshirts, the Orange Army of OSU-CVM was in evidence everywhere you looked. Three days of lectures, wet labs, exciting day trips, and fun evening events made for a great experience even with the unseasonably wet and cold weather that hit northern California. Of course, being Oregonians, the Beavers were undeterred by a little rain.

With the unusually high number of students there, OSU was well represented in the academic and athletic competitions that are a part of Symposium. The Flag Football Tournament was won by team members Steen Smith, Jamie Senthirajah and David Johnston in the class of 2014; Olivia Williams, Stacee Hironaga, Sean Brady in the class of 2013; Ken Hironaga; and Kim Parker in the class of 2012.

In the Radiology Challenge represented by first-year student Rob Seifken, second-year students Angela Schlenker and Sara Livesay, and third-year student Sandra Lloyd, OSU competed against eight other schools and won first place. In an email Angela Schlenker sent to Dr. Susanne Stieger-Vanegas she wrote, “I believe this obviously shows that we have received an outstanding education in radiology, and I personally would like to thank you for that.” Kudos well-deserved.

The Global and Public Health Officer recognized OSU SCAVMA’s Ride the Heart of the Valley event for outstanding creativity and also as the top fundraiser for the year with the current theme of obesity as a public health issue. Vector borne diseases was announced as the new public health focus for the next two years.

In the SAVMA House of Delegates (HOD) the primary order of business was final approval of a two-year-long project to improve the efficiency of the organization. Over the past two years the HOD has scrapped the constitution in favor of bylaws; realigned the committee structure; and approved an entirely new set of governance documents. In the future this should make the organization more effective in representing and supporting the veterinary students of member institutions. The most significant piece of business was the approval of the Duty Hours Proposal. This is a non-binding recommendation for duty hours limitations for veterinary students at member institutions similar to recent reforms in the human medical fields. More information on these recommendations will be forthcoming in the next few months. The HOD awarded the bid for the 2013 Symposium to Louisana State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

Outgoing treasurer Brian Zulauf (OSU-CVM ‘11) was honored for his service over the last two years, and Julie Stafford (OSU-CVM ‘13) was elected to the position of International Exchange Officer-elect. Over the next two years Julie will establish relationships within the international veterinary community while serving as a liaison between SAVMA and the International Veterinary Student Association (IVSA). She would like to remind all SCAVMA members that as such you are automatically members of SAVMA and therefore members of IVSA. Remember this if you are thinking about pursuing international exchange opportunities and you want to check out what IVSA has to offer.

SAVMA Symposium was a great experience, and the students at UC-Davis did a great job hosting the event. All the OSU students that attended are grateful to the OSU Student Foundation for the generous grant that helped to cover the cost of hotels for the attendees. Next year, SAVMA Symposium will be at Purdue — unfortunately during our winter term dead week.

Summer Research Program

April 12th, 2011

The objective of the summer research program at the College of Veterinary Medicine is to provide an opportunity for veterinary students to have a faculty-guided, positive, and rewarding research experience in the basic or clinical sciences. In addition, the program provides an introduction to research issues, facilities, opportunities, and current research topics. The actual research experience occurs in the summer, but students have been busy since the beginning of the year with literature searches, proposal writing, and project planning.

The program started in 2001 and has seen continuous growth. It has received generous extramural support through the Merck-Merial Veterinary Scholars Program (MMVSP) 2001-2009, and the Merial Veterinary Scholars Program (MVSP) since 2010 with matching funds provided by the College of Veterinary Medicine. Now in its ninth year at OSU, the MMVSP/MVSP has allowed 47 students to go through a summer filled with research activities, seminars and field trips. In addition, internal funding from the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the CVM has supported the summer research projects of 59 veterinary students. This means that over 100 veterinary students had the opportunity to explore problems in basic and clinical sciences and to increase their awareness of the excitement and challenges of the research process. The program is expanding this year to include student research projects funded by the Department of Clinical Sciences and an international outreach program sponsored by the Department of Biomedical Sciences.

The summer research program is competitive and the selection process rigorous. Preparation of applications requires close collaboration between scholars and faculty mentors. Applications are reviewed by an ad hoc committee including the program director, Dr. Christiane Löhr, and members of the research committee.

The CVM is proud to announce this year’s awardees:
