On January 18, Dr. Michael Huber led a group of 21 student members of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) to Portland Meadows Racetrack for a glimpse of racetrack medicine. The group toured both the front and the backside of the racetrack.
On the back side, they visited a racing barn where the horses are stabled and spoke with Dr. Jack Root about his duties as a track veterinarian. They also learned about the testing requirements for racehorses in Oregon. They were then taken to the Turf Club where they enjoyed lunch and watched some races. Afterwards, they joined veterinarian Dr. Candie Corriher, a veterinarian for the Oregon Racing Commission, as she monitored horse health and safety in the saddling paddock, at the loading gates, and throughout the race.
