{"id":29,"date":"2018-03-27T19:57:28","date_gmt":"2018-03-27T19:57:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/collegeofforestry\/?p=29"},"modified":"2018-08-01T00:41:25","modified_gmt":"2018-08-01T00:41:25","slug":"savannah-stanton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.blogs.oregonstate.edu\/collegeofforestry\/2018\/03\/27\/savannah-stanton\/","title":{"rendered":"Savannah Stanton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Savannah Stanton<\/strong> is just a junior, but she already has plans to graduate from <a href=\"https:\/\/oregonstate.edu\/\">Oregon State<\/a> debt free and work to change the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always wanted to do something for my community and for the world,\u201d she says. \u201cThrough <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forestry.oregonstate.edu\/undergraduate-programs\/renewable-materials\">renewable materials<\/a>, I have the opportunity to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Newburg High School valedictorian chose to attend Oregon State after she was awarded an academic achievement scholarship, but she still attended classes simultaneously at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcc.edu\/\">Portland Community College<\/a> to get her baccalaureate core classes out of the way and discover her passion. She found it in a class taught by <strong>Seri Robinson<\/strong> called \u201cAre You Wearing Mold?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe class drew me into the world of renewable materials,\u201d Stanton says. \u201cIn the class, we dove into the world of fungi and what could be done with it. It was fun to do a hands-on class like that. It really appealed to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stanton believes an interdisciplinary course of study will be the key to her future success. He focus within renewable materials is science and engineering. She\u2019s taken business classes, math classes and she will also earn a minor in Spanish.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery time a new term starts, I get new ideas,\u201d she says. \u201cMy business classes inspired me to think about owning my own business someday instead of working for someone else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Stanton isn\u2019t exactly sure what she wants to do yet. Instead, she\u2019s excited about a world of possibilities at home in Oregon and around the world.<\/p>\n<p>During the summer of 2016, Stanton interned at a wood mill in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forestry.oregonstate.edu\/chile-initiative\">Chile<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was my first time working in a mill setting,\u201d she says. \u201cIt helped me understand the traditional part of our industry as well as an idea of the current needs are and expanded who I know within the small world of renewable materials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stanton says her entire experience in Chile was funded through scholarships from the College of Forestry.<\/p>\n<p>Back at home, Stanton is also involved in the student chapter of the Society of American Foresters at Oregon State.
