People who change their names (when they get married, for example) may also have difficulty getting credit for their prior publications. \u00a0Both of these scenarios happen frequently.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/cdss\/files\/2016\/06\/Screen-Shot-2016-05-26-at-9.27.29-AM-300x191.png\" alt=\"Two researchers with the same name and department affiliation\" width=\"198\" height=\"125\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/2705\/files\/2016\/06\/Screen-Shot-2016-05-26-at-9.27.29-AM-300x191.png 300w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/2705\/files\/2016\/06\/Screen-Shot-2016-05-26-at-9.27.29-AM.png 636w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 198px) 85vw, 198px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/cdss\/files\/2016\/06\/Screen-Shot-2016-05-26-at-9.29.11-AM-300x130.png\" alt=\"A researcher gets married and changes his name\" width=\"301\" height=\"130\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/2705\/files\/2016\/06\/Screen-Shot-2016-05-26-at-9.29.11-AM-300x130.png 300w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/2705\/files\/2016\/06\/Screen-Shot-2016-05-26-at-9.29.11-AM-768x333.png 768w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/2705\/files\/2016\/06\/Screen-Shot-2016-05-26-at-9.29.11-AM.png 916w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 301px) 85vw, 301px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>The solution: ORCID<\/h2>\n<p>ORCID is a registry that provides a persistent digital identifier disambiguating your work from other researchers\u2019. \u00a0This ensures that your work is recognized. \u00a0ORCID <a href=\"http:\/\/orcid.org\/organizations\/integrators\/integration-chart\">integrates with submission systems<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for major publishers and funders like the NIH, Taylor and Francis, Elsevier, FigShare, Nature Publishing Group, Springer, and IEEE. \u00a0Since its founding in 2012, ORCID has added 2 million users.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Still not sold on taking a few minutes to get an ORCID ID? \u00a0Here are some reasons researchers (understandably!) balk at signing up for ORCID. \u00a0These objections actually make getting an ORCID<\/p>\n<h2>Objection 1: You already have a profile on Google Scholar \/ ResearchGate \/ Academia.edu<\/h2>\n<p>You may have already <a href=\"http:\/\/guides.library.oregonstate.edu\/visibility\/scholar\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">claimed your Google Scholar profile<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u00a0However, Google\u2019s algorithm for adding content doesn\u2019t ensure all your works will show up, especially recent works and gray literature like whitepapers and presentations. \u00a0ResearchGate, Academia.edu, and Google Scholar are all for-profit enterprises. \u00a0Although they are good at obtaining content, it\u2019s rarely in their interest to freely share data with other systems. \u00a0Thus, you end up typing the same information over and over again.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Objection 2: You\u2019re tired of filling out the same information over and over<\/h2>\n<p>It may feel like ORCID is just another redundant profile. \u00a0But ORCID, a non-profit registry, shares your data with other parties that you trust, adhering to an <b><i>\u201cinput once, reuse often\u201d<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> principle. \u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/orcid.org\/blog\/2016\/01\/07\/publishers-start-requiring-orcid-ids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Academic publishers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/impactstory.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">altmetrics tools<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/orcid.org\/blog\/2015\/12\/04\/research-funders-and-orcid-new-members-mandates-and-platforms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">funders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and institutional repositories are increasingly requiring or encouraging ORCID registration to auto-populate researchers\u2019 profiles. \u00a0This actually eliminates the frustration of typing out your CV information over and over again.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>So how do you get an ORCID?<\/h2>\n<p>Establishing an ORCID is free and quick. Register on the <a href=\"http:\/\/orcid.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ORCID homepage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.
