There are many benefits to networking:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make connections &#8211; be actively aware of possible opportunities<\/li>\n<li>Gain a network of support who speak in your favor<\/li>\n<li>Recommendations are often made by people you know through networking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Social Media Sites<\/strong>:\u00a0 If you\u2019re thinking <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Oregon-State-University-Career-Services\/38909095630#%21\/pages\/Oregon-State-University-Career-Services\/38909095630\">Facebook<\/a>, you\u2019re absolutely right!\u00a0 Companies do use Facebook to look for future employees. If you\u2019re lucky, you might be hired for an internship or even a potential job! <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/home?trk=hb_home\">LinkedIn<\/a> is also another site that can be helpful for you in finding the right internship.<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Research:<\/strong> Online resources such as those that offered by <a href=\"http:\/\/oregonstate.edu\/career\/welcome\">OSU Career Services<\/a> may be the quickest place to look.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/oregonstate.edu\/career\/welcome\">Beaver JobNet<\/a>, for instance, allows you to search internships in and out of state and even overseas. Companies love to see that you\u2019ve done previous research and have an understanding of their organization. This shows that you\u2019re interested in working and thinking about future career development with them.<\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/oregonstate.edu\/career\/informational-interviewing\"><strong>Informational Interview<\/strong><\/a>: Set up an informational interview with a potential employer that you\u2019re interested in working with. Keep in mind that informational interviewing is not where you ask the employer for a position in the company, but rather an opportunity for you to discuss what the company has to offer.<\/p>\n<p>5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/oregonstate.edu\/career\/career-fairs-events\"><strong>Career Fair<\/strong><\/a><strong>:<\/strong> Allows you to meet many employers from all around the country, hence broadening your possibilities of meeting the company that you possibly want to work with. Upcoming Career Fair is on February 23<sup>rd<\/sup> and 24<sup>th<\/sup> at the CH2M Alumni Center.<\/p>\n<p>6.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Be Prepared<\/strong>: Having a <a href=\"http:\/\/oregonstate.edu\/career\/cover-letter-writing\">Cover Letter<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/oregonstate.edu\/career\/resume-writing\">Resume<\/a> at hand when you\u2019re ready to apply for an internship\/job is very crucial. Keep in mind that the average time to make a solid resume is at least 20hours.<\/p>\n<p>Words of Advice:<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 When you form a relationship, maintain that relationship<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 Always <strong>follow up<\/strong> with the person you spoke with at a particular company\/organization in order to maintain that contact<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 Be professional, attentive and always be on time<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 Don\u2019t procrastinate, you\u2019re putting your career at risk<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 Always ask for help\u2026the most successful people are those that get help from others. You can\u2019t succeed totally on your own!<\/p>\n<p>Opportunities are endless! Be the first bird that catches the worms, all the worms.
