The class had just two objectives: learn how to evaluate whether an actual, innovative technology has commercial value, and if so; what&#8217;s the best path to commercialize the new technology?<\/p>\n<p>Using the book \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Running-Lean-Iterate-Works-Series\/dp\/1449305172\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1401923667&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=running+lean\" target=\"_blank\">Running Lean<\/a>\u201d and the &#8220;Lean Canvas&#8221; approach as the primary methodology for evaluating business opportunities, the class was divided up into four teams, and each was assigned a real potential business to evaluate. <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/business\/files\/2014\/06\/IMG_8783_small.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1995 alignleft\" title=\"Student points out some finer details from his team's commercialization plan\" alt=\"Student points out some finer details from his team's commercialization plan\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/business\/files\/2014\/06\/IMG_8783_small-300x199.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/494\/files\/2014\/06\/IMG_8783_small-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/494\/files\/2014\/06\/IMG_8783_small-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/494\/files\/2014\/06\/IMG_8783_small-600x399.jpg 600w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/494\/files\/2014\/06\/IMG_8783_small.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After thoroughly researching and exploring all the ins and outs of their potential venture throughout the spring term, it all came down to a final business plan competition in which each team had just 25 minutes to pitch their business plans to a panel of Portland Business Roundtable judges, who then thoroughly grilled the students about every conceivable detail of their technology and chosen commercialization model.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1992\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1992\" style=\"width: 199px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/business\/files\/2014\/06\/IMG_8755_small.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1992 \" title=\"showing off some new technology\" alt=\"showing off some new technology\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/business\/files\/2014\/06\/IMG_8755_small-199x300.jpg\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/494\/files\/2014\/06\/IMG_8755_small-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/494\/files\/2014\/06\/IMG_8755_small-99x150.jpg 99w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/494\/files\/2014\/06\/IMG_8755_small.jpg 266w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1992\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A student demonstrates his team&#8217;s new energy efficient LED lights for growing plants indoors<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After each presentation, the judges convened to score each team on a scale of one to five based on how well the material was presented and whether it was clear and easy to follow, and on whether or not the presentation style maintained the audience\u2019s attention and reinforced the critical points of the business case while using the allotted time effectively.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This class was a departure from the norm, and I really enjoyed the freedom it afforded me as a student,&#8221; said business administration senior Trevor Smith.\u00a0 &#8220;It&#8217;s not often as students that we we get the opportunity to be exposed to the &#8216;real world&#8217;.\u00a0 Actual industry trends and practices drove this project and determined what we did at every step, which is a unique experiential learning opportunity. Unlike other classes where students simply develop business plans, this class was more than just an academic exercise.\u00a0 It was reality,&#8221; said Smith.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This experience definitely prepared me for the real world and taught me that no business plan is perfect the first time through. Team Honeycomb walked away victorious for their business plan that makes drone technology commercially available for agricultural use.
