Taking time and honestly assessing a situation and how it will affect us can go a long way to creating a positive outcome, Gino said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">From there, it\u2019s important to look at the context of a situation \u2014 our emotions, relationships and other influences \u2014 and imagine if those could be changing the way you see a decision.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Gino showed an experiment where subjects were more likely to cheat if they saw someone wearing shirt for their school do it, but less than average if the cheater had a rival\u2019s shirt on.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1489\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1489\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/business\/files\/2014\/01\/francesca-gino-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1489 \" title=\"Francesca Gino Dean's Distinguished Lecture\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/business\/files\/2014\/01\/francesca-gino-2-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/494\/files\/2014\/01\/francesca-gino-2-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/494\/files\/2014\/01\/francesca-gino-2-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/494\/files\/2014\/01\/francesca-gino-2.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1489\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Francesca Gino sits down with College of Business assistant professor Keith Leavitt for a Q&amp;A at the end of her talk.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cEven in a situation as important as ethics, we\u2019re often swayed by those close to us,\u201d Gino said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">While Gino said realizing the effect small factors have on us can be discouraging \u2014 would we really act differently if someone next to us had a Beaver or Duck on their shirt? \u2014 it\u2019s also empowering to know we can change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can sort of end up with your hands in your hair, screaming \u2018We are so biased!\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cBut it\u2019s also hopeful, because you can find that context and next time make a better decision.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the beginning of her College of Business Dean\u2019s Distinguished Lecture Tuesday, Harvard Business School Associate Professor Francesca Gino gave the audience a short quiz.
