Apparel Design Director Receives University Day Award

Each fall the Oregon State University hosts a day that encourages faculty and staff to connect with each other and learn about what other departments and colleges are doing. Intended to inspire and motivate employees for the impending academic year, it is also a day to recognize and honor the people and achievements of its employees.

Taking place September 18, 2014, University Day includes awards to approximately 20 faculty and staff members in various categories for their accomplishments and contributions.

College of Business and School of Human Design Instructor, Brigitte Cluver, who also serves as the Program Coordinator for Apparel Design and Merchandising Management, is the recipient of the OSU Faculty Teaching Excellence Award. This award honors unusually significant and meritorious achievement in teaching and scholarship, greatly enhancing instruction for students.

“Brigitte is an extremely dedicated teacher who finds a balance between empathy and stringency. She is uncompromising in her demand for excellence, and provides ample support for students to succeed in their learning,” said Minjeong Kim, Associate Dean for the School of Design and Human Environment.

Cluver, who holds a B.S. from University of California at Davis and two degrees from Oregon State (M.S. and Ph.D. in Human Behavior in the Near Environment) also worked in the textile and apparel industry as a textile laboratory technician.

“As a life-long learner, Brigitte is open to learning new strategies and commits herself to innovative teaching that results in enhanced student learning. Her courses are always evolving with more effective teaching methods.”

Awards were given by President Ed Ray at the OSU Faculty Teaching Award Reception on Wednesday, September 17 and again acknowledged at an all university presentation held at LaSells Stewart Center in Austin Auditorium on University Day.

Pair of College of Business faculty honored at University Day

Each year as the start of school approaches, the faculty and staff of Oregon State University take a moment to celebrate and honor the achievements of the past year at University Day.

Dr. Ed Ray, Oregon State University president, told a record turnout at the LaSells Stewart Center that while the Oregon State community has begun to reach many goals — including the coming completion of the Campaign for OSU — there is still much to do to continue pushing OSU forward.

“Today marks the promise this new year holds,” Ray said.

This year two College of Business faculty members — both associate professors of finance — were honored at the event for their work over the past year.

John Becker-Blease earned the OSU Faculty Teaching Excellence Award, honoring unusually significant and meritorious achievement in teaching and scholarship which enhances effective instruction. The award recognizes those who combine the ability to impact students in the classroom as well as produce original and nationally-recognized research. In 2011 Becker-Blease was the first professor in Oregon named the Aspen Institute Faculty Pioneer in the Rising Star category.

Dave Berger received the Promising Scholar Award, recognizing the scholarship of junior faculty. The award highlights faculty members who have achieved a high level of accomplishment in a relatively short time at Oregon State. Since joining Oregon State Berger has been published in Applied Financial Economics, the Global Finance Journal and the Journal of Financial Economics among others.

College of Business faculty honored at University Day

University Day at the LaSalle Stewart Center.

With students moving in, the Oregon State University Marching Band waiting outside and activity picking up all around campus, three College of Business Faculty members were honored as part of University Day Tuesday.

Ping-Hung Hsieh, Associate Professor and Director of Global Business Analysis, and Brenda Sallee, Head Academic Advisor for the college, were each honored with OSU Faculty and Staff awards.

Ping received the International Service Award, which recognizes exemplary, on-going contributions of OSU faculty and staff to the internationalization of the university by enhancing student, faculty, and staff awareness and participation in international education, research, and related activities.

Sallee was given the OSU Academic Advising Award, recognizing undergraduate academic advising by professional faculty rank as well as fixed-term academic rank faculty whose primary role is advising and acknowledges advising as a profession making a pivotal contribution to the OSU community.

Later in the event, Don Neubaum, Associate Dean for Research and Faculty, took part in the keynote panel on inspiring campus conversation around innovation.

Also participating were Associate Provost for Academic Success and Engagement Susie Brubaker-Cole and Associate Dean for the College of Liberal Arts Susana Rivera-Mills. James Cassidy, senior instructor for crop and soil science, moderated the panel.

Neubaum spoke about the College of Business’ culture, and how the college has focused on hiring faculty who fit where that culture is heading.

“We hire great scholars, faculty who are passionate about undergraduate education,” Neubaum said. “If you hire the right people, the rest can take care of itself.”
