They may assist their mentors with field work, lab work, analysis, research, policy development or public engagement efforts.<\/p>\n<p>The video, produced by <a href=\"http:\/\/seagrant.oregonstate.edu\/\">Oregon Sea Grant<\/a> (OSG), also highlights some of this summer\u2019s activities and includes interviews with students and mentors.<\/p>\n<p>Ten students from seven different states participated in this year\u2019s program, interning with agencies such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dfw.state.or.us\/\">Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife<\/a> (ODFW), the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usda.gov\/\">USDA<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/tourism.oregonstate.edu\/about-us\/\">OSU Extension Tourism Program<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/\">EPA<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oregon.gov\/DSL\/SS\/Pages\/About.aspx\">South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve<\/a>. Students worked on topics ranging from monitoring recovering sea star populations to spreading awareness about marine reserves to testing unmanned aircraft systems\u2019 viability in shellfish surveys.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3774\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/breakingwaves\/files\/2017\/08\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-24-at-4.52.48-PM-300x205.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/181\/files\/2017\/08\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-24-at-4.52.48-PM-300x205.png 300w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/181\/files\/2017\/08\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-24-at-4.52.48-PM-768x526.png 768w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/181\/files\/2017\/08\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-24-at-4.52.48-PM-400x274.png 400w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/181\/files\/2017\/08\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-24-at-4.52.48-PM.png 894w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Students also participated in a professional-development workshop on science communication and outreach and engagement. The workshop was followed by a hiking and camping trip, allowing students both to explore more of Oregon&#8217;s scenic beauty and spend some quality time with their cohort.<\/p>\n<p>The program culminated with a symposium that was open to the public.
