Her ongoing science teacher character, Erma, is modeled after former NOAA administrator and OSU zoologist Jane Lubchenco and Eliot’s friend Dr. Kathy Sullivan (now Lubchenco’s successor at the agency’s helm). The character is named after ERMA (Emergency Response Management Application), a web-based NOAA tool, available to the public, for managing information in oil spill crises.

Follow as the story unfolds over the next two weeks in your local newspaper, or at http://www.gocomics.com/stonesoup

Learn more

Check out Oregon Sea Grant’s invasive species resources, including

Our Watershed and Invasive Species Education (WISE) program, featuring STEM-based curricula and lesson plans for teachers and their classrooms

Follow the WISE Blog and “like” our WISE Facebook page

Explore the Pacific Northwest ERMA application from NOAA and the University of New Hampshire

NEW: Cartoonist Jan Eliot blogs about her love of marine science

When Oregon cartoonist Jan Eliot, who draws the popular “Stone Soup” comic strip, wanted to feature a storyline about how animals common in one place can become invasive species in another, she turned to Oregon Sea Grant’s Sam Chan for … Continue reading →

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[1223989,1223969,1223976,5614,1223981

post-2607","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-extension","category-invasive-species","category-oregon-sea-grant","category-science-communication","category-science-education
["GET
