{"id":1466,"date":"2011-09-26T09:53:05","date_gmt":"2011-09-26T16:53:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/breakingwaves\/?p=1466"},"modified":"2011-09-26T09:53:05","modified_gmt":"2011-09-26T16:53:05","slug":"volcanic-vents-offer-peek-at-acidic-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.blogs.oregonstate.edu\/breakingwaves\/2011\/09\/26\/volcanic-vents-offer-peek-at-acidic-future\/","title":{"rendered":"Volcanic vents offer peek at acidic future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The underwater volcanoes off a tiny Italian island are helping  scientists peer into the future of a world altered by increasing amounts  of carbon dioxide emitted into the air and absorbed into the oceans.<\/p>\n<p>The waters just off the island of Ischia mirror the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ouramazingplanet.com\/earth-oceans-mass-extinction-0385\/\">projected conditions of the Earth&#8217;s oceans <\/a>at the beginning of the next century because the <a href=\"http:\/\/cms.livescience.com\/15474-vent-underwater-volcano.html\">volcanic vents <\/a>found there infuse the water with large helpings of carbon dioxide, or CO<sub>2<\/sub>, which turns seawater acidic.<\/p>\n<p>Research has shown that the growing acidic conditions are harmful to  some sea creatures \u2014 those that build their protective shells with  calcium are increasingly prevented from doing so the more acidic waters  become.<\/p>\n<p>The fates of these creatures and the stability of the ocean food  chain are a major concern over the next century and beyond because of  the carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere by humans, as the  oceans absorb about 30 percent of this carbon dioxide.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One part of climate change that is indisputable is that CO<sub>2<\/sub> is rising in the atmosphere \u2014 it&#8217;s easy to measure,&#8221; said Bill  Chadwick, an Oregon State University geologist. &#8220;And it&#8217;s indisputable  that it is making the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ouramazingplanet.com\/arctic-expedition-testing-ocean-acidity-1861\/\">oceans more acidic <\/a>\u2014 we can measure it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>(Oregon Sea Grant has supported previous deep-sea research projects by Dr. Chadwick).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/44597041\/ns\/technology_and_science-science\/#.ToCr0RnO9Bk\">Read the whole story at<\/a> Science On mbc.com<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The underwater volcanoes off a tiny Italian island are helping scientists peer into the future of a world altered by increasing amounts of carbon dioxide emitted into the air and absorbed into the oceans.
