{"id":1325,"date":"2011-06-23T10:41:08","date_gmt":"2011-06-23T17:41:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/breakingwaves\/?p=1325"},"modified":"2011-06-23T10:41:08","modified_gmt":"2011-06-23T17:41:08","slug":"study-shows-importance-of-hotspots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.blogs.oregonstate.edu\/breakingwaves\/2011\/06\/23\/study-shows-importance-of-hotspots\/","title":{"rendered":"Study of Pacific predators shows importance of biological \u201chotspots\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/oregonstateuniversity\/5858411968\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1326\" style=\"border: 0pt none;margin: 5px\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/breakingwaves\/files\/2011\/06\/blue-whale-osu.jpg\" alt=\"Blue Whale\" width=\"240\" height=\"161\" \/><\/a>NEWPORT, Ore. \u2013 An unprecedented decade-long study of apex predators in the Pacific Ocean found a wider range of distribution among some species than previously thought, unknown relationships between other species, and the importance of biological \u201chotspots\u201d to the survival of most of these sea creatures.<\/p>\n<p>The field program, dubbed Tagging of Pacific Predators \u2013 or TOPP \u2013 looked at 23 species from 2000-09 and included researchers from multiple institutions.<\/p>\n<p>Results of the study are being published this week in the journal Nature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne thing that quickly became apparent is that there are many similarities among top predators in the California Current System,\u201d said Bruce Mate, a former Sea Grant specialist who directs the Marine Mammal Institute at Oregon State University and co-authored the study. \u201cThere is a strong overlap in territory, for example, between blue whales and tuna.
