Oregon Sea Grant on YouTube: Buying fresh tuna
Kaety Hildenbrand of Oregon Sea Grant Extension shows how to buy an Albacore tuna directly from a commercial fisherman: what questions to ask, what to expect, and what you need to bring to get your fish home safely. Fresh, nutritious seafood is widely regarded as a good dietary choice to promote health, and visitors to coastal docks often see signs for fisher-sold catch. The 5-minute video puts fish, fishers, and consumers together.
The video is one of 13 short subjects on the Oregon Sea Grant YouTube channel.
Oregon Sea Grant video cover wins Silver Award
The cover for Oregon Sea Grant’s video Preparing for Coastal Climate Change: What Oregonians Are Asking has won a Silver Award in the “Best Cover—Print/Other” category of the 2011 Magnum Opus Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Custom Media. There were 560 entries in this year’s competition, and the Silver Award was the top award given in the “Best Cover” category.
According to Magnum Opus, professors from the Missouri School of Journalism, along with leading custom-publishing professionals, judge the awards based on “informational and entertainment value, quality of writing and display copy, creative use of imagery and typography, and consistency of color palette and style.”
David Murray, director of the awards competition and editor-in-chief of ContentWise, said, “Your entry shone bright among an incredibly competitive field and bested the work submitted by your peers in the practice of marketing communications from around the globe. You should be proud.”
The jacket and label for Preparing for Coastal Climate Change were designed by Patricia Andersson of Oregon Sea Grant. The video was produced by Joe Cone, assistant director of Oregon Sea Grant; edited by Stevon Roberts; and supported in part by a grant from the NOAA Climate Program Office.

Heceta Head Conference to focus on working waterfronts
Register now for “Oregon’s Oceans: Working Waterfronts,” the 6th annual Heceta Head Conference Oct. 28-29 at the Florence Events Center.
The conference is devoted to bringing new understanding of the Pacific Ocean off the Oregon coast through recent scientific advances and policy developments that benefit coastal communities. This year’s program, “Working Waterfronts,” examines the complexity of waterfronts in their multiple uses, diverse industries and environmental habitats.
For the first time this year, Oregon Sea Grant is partnering with the conference; Jamie Doyle, Sea Grant Extension agent in Coquille/Coos Bay, is developing the program of events, which begins on Thursday with a “discovery tour” of the Florence waterfront with the Port of Siuslaw and the Siuslaw Estuary Partnership.
Participants will view stormwater remonstration sites, port-led waterfront activities and projects, wetland restoration, natural resources as cultural resources, and salmon and trout enhancement projects – and the first 36 people to register will get a Siuslaw River boat trip.
The conference continues on Friday with a full day of presentations and panels on topics ranging from estuary conservation to “smart growth” for coastal communities and waterfronts.
