The Malouf Scholarship is awarded to support a graduate student who combines societally relevant research with education or public engagement. The student can be enrolled at any College or University in Oregon while working towards a degree in any field compatible with Oregon Sea Grant’s mandate and areas of interest. There are no restrictions on the discipline, which may include, but is not limited to: biological, geological, physical and chemical sciences; marine resource management and policy; marine resource economics; social sciences; engineering; geology; education or public health. The overriding purpose of the Scholarship is to make a difference by providing a significant contribution to students seeking advanced degrees and to contribute to building the nation’s future capacity in the marine sciences.

A summer opportunity – Oregon South Coast Tourism

College students: Looking for a great way to spend the summer while learning and working with coastal Oregon communities? Take a look at our newest fellowship opportunity on Oregon’s south coast!

Oregon Sea Grant and the Wild Rivers Coast Alliance (WRCA) are offering an epic summer outreach experience. One upper-level undergraduate or graduate level student will experience the beauty of the south coast and help develop WRCA coastal tourism programs and initiatives to vitalize south coast communities. This hands-on experience features mentorship by a career professional, student housing in Bandon, Oregon, if needed, and a summer stipend. The fellowship dates are flexible -between June and September- and will span about ten weeks.

Applications due April 19, 2013 for the Oregon Sea Grant Summer Scholars program for undergraduates. The program places students in natural resource management agencies and is designed to help prepare undergraduate students for graduate school and careers in marine science, policy, management, and outreach.

Oregon Sea Grant announces Call for Preliminary Proposals

The Oregon Sea Grant Program invites preliminary proposals for research on important marine and coastal issues from researchers who are affiliated with any institution of higher education. Proposals will be entered into a highly competitive review and selection process. Proposed work may begin on either February 1, 2014, or February 1, 2015.

Preliminary proposals due: Friday, February 15, 2013, before 5:00 p.m. PST.

2012 Oregon Sea Grant Scholars Day Symposium

Oregon Sea Grant will hold its inaugural Scholars Day Symposium on October 8th, 2012 in the Memorial Union Joyce Powell Leadership Center Journey Room.  The Symposium starts at noon and ends at 5:00.

The agenda and the program abstracts can be downloaded on our Scholars Day website.

Join us for all or part of the afternoon. Thy symposium will feature presentations and posters by some of the brightest young scholars supported by Oregon Sea Grant’s fellowship, scholarship, internship, and research programs.

Besides showcasing undergraduate and graduate student projects and achievements, this interdepartmental, inter-institutional event is an opportunity for dialogue among researchers, decision makers, industry leaders, and the academic community about Oregon’s current ocean and coastal issues.

The Sea Grant Scholars program is intended to recognize and enhance long-term benefits to students who receive academic and research support from Oregon Sea Grant. The goal is to create a community of scholars, help them identify with the program and its mission, and foster professional development, research and outreach within coastal and ocean sciences in the state.

Oregon’s Ocean: Bringing the High Seas Home

The Pacific Ocean is a dynamic place full of activity and motion.  But what does that mean for Oregonians? This year’s conference will look closely at connections between Oregon’s Ocean and the rest of the globe. We’ll examine the important science, economics, and policies affecting things that float, swim, drift, stowaway, steam, and bob across the Pacific to Oregon’s shores, and vice versa!

Speakers include the First Lady of Oregon, Cylvia Hayes, Representative Arnie Roblan, and researchers and natural resource managers from around the state.

Students invited to submit posters for the 2012 Heceta Head Coastal Conference

Oregon’s Ocean: Bringing the High Seas Home

FLORENCE – The 2012 Heceta Head Coastal Conference brings current ocean science and policy to Oregonians.  Attendees include university scientists, ocean policy agency staff, politicians, students, and the general public.  The conference is co-sponsored by Oregon Sea Grant.

The Pacific Ocean is a dynamic place full of activity and motion.  This year highlights the science of things that float, swim, drift, stowaway, steam, and bob across the Pacific to Oregon’s Ocean.

What to expect: The student poster session is part of a full day program (Saturday, October 27).

A dedicated session allows conference attendees to view posters and interact with student scientists as they explain their research and results.

Welcome our new NOAA Coastal Management Fellow

Kelsey Gianou is Oregon Sea Grant’s newest NOAA Coastal Management Fellow!

Kelsey, a Marine Resource Management masters student at Oregon State University, has been matched with the Washington State Department of Ecology to provide green shorelines guidance for state and local governments in Puget Sound.

Six states and 11 finalists attended this year’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal Management Fellowship matching workshop.  Six finalists were selected to serve two-year terms as coastal management fellows at the six state agencies.  For more information on this fellowship program, click here to visit the Oregon Sea Grant fellowships page.
