Multiple Hardships

  • Due to existing patterns of socio-economic isolation, many minority families face conditions of compounding deprivation make it harder for them build and maintain wealth with family members behind bars
    • As a whole, 53% of incarcerated fathers had a personal income of under $1,000 in the month before arrest. 51% of mothers had monthly personal income below $600.
    • With this income terminated, those incarcerated are able to work on work releases, but only earn a fraction of their previous earnings.
  • Children of those behind bars often have to change their living arrangements.

Developmental disadvantages faced by children with incarcerated parents

  • Impaired socioemotional development
  • Rejection of behavioral limitations
  • impaired response to trauma
  • increased likelihood of intergenerational crime.
  • In a very recent study children with incarcerated parents are also at greater risk of heart attacks and cardiovascular problems as adults.
