Selene and I headed to Newport to help host the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pmel.noaa.gov\/acoustics\/\">PMEL Acoustics<\/a> information table, but I also had a chance to\u00a0explore the event and see what other labs\u00a0had on display.<\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"http:\/\/mmi.oregonstate.edu\/\">Marine Mammal Institute<\/a>\u00a0room, I visited fellow Fisheries and Wildlife graduate students. In this photo, I am adding ethanol to separate the DNA material from the water in the vial.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/samarahaver.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/img_3966.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-45 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/samarahaver.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/img_3966.jpg?w=240&#038;resize=240%2C300\" alt=\"IMG_3966\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the Oregon Department of Fisheries and Wildlife\u00a0outside tent I learned about shellfishing regulations. Sustaining the Dungeness crab fishery requires that recreational fisherman only take males crabs that are larger than 5 3\/4&#8243; across. I had pretty bad luck and sadly had remove a lot of fish and sea stars from the ocean.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/samarahaver.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/img_3977.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  alignleft wp-image-51\" src=\"https:\/\/samarahaver.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/img_3977.jpg?w=300&#038;resize=250%2C201\" alt=\"IMG_3977\" width=\"250\" height=\"201\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/samarahaver.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/img_3978.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-52\" src=\"https:\/\/samarahaver.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/img_3978.jpg?w=300&#038;resize=250%2C196\" alt=\"IMG_3978\" width=\"250\" height=\"196\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Finally, at the PMEL Acoustics table, Joe, Selene, and I showed an example of our hydrophones and explained how we use a 3D printer to create custom assembly components. We\u00a0also had a microphone set-up with a real-time\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bioacoustics.us\/ishmael.html\">Ismael<\/a>\u00a0display.
