1. List of Non-Infectious Diseases that are influenced by Microorganisms
Peptic ulcer disease, mental health disorders (possibly), Alzheimer’s disease (link is correlational), Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea, Other GI diseases, Obesity, Behavioral diseases, Allergies, Asthma, and Crohn’s Disease. While some of these may seem like they are overlapping it is possible that there are many more diseases than we previously thought that are affected by microorganisms. Due to the way in which they body works it is interesting to see how so many different diseases are affects by microorganisms even if they are not infectious. I am surprised at how many different diseases that are non-infectious are affected by microorganisms and there are likely many more that I am simply forgetting at the moment.
2. Reflect and Discuss Week 1 versus Now (Week 10)
I thought it was interesting to go back and see what I wrote for week 1 when talking about the same thing of non-infectious diseases that are influenced by microorganisms. I think when I was originally thinking about it I did not fully understood what was meant by non-infectious because it could have different meanings to different people possibly. I think I also was not taking into consideration a lot of diseases that maybe are unheard of unless you work in the healthcare industry and have seen them firsthand. In the first week I really only focused on three smaller diseases that could be influenced and in learning more about microorganisms and diseases I was able to come up with more diseases that could be influenced by the microorganisms that live in people. While I do not think that I touched on every disease that may be affected by microorganisms I definitely thought of more this time around. In addition, I think there may have been some diseases that I forgot but there are some that just are not at the forefront of my mind but could be influenced through the microorganisms that inhabit our guts. I think the most important concepts/ topics that I will take away is that even though diseases that affect us are non-infectious they can still be affected by microorganisms even if it is not directly causing the disease. I think it is important to look at the disease and the microorganisms to see if there is a way we can help both the host and the microbial population get better to help the health of the host better.
