{"id":2308,"date":"2014-03-06T21:34:54","date_gmt":"2014-03-06T21:34:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pharmacy.oregonstate.edu\/blogs\/news\/?p=2308"},"modified":"2014-04-09T18:20:53","modified_gmt":"2014-04-09T18:20:53","slug":"pharmacy-students-at-ashp-mid-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.blogs.oregonstate.edu\/beaverx\/2014\/03\/06\/pharmacy-students-at-ashp-mid-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Pharmacy Students at ASHP Mid-Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2310 alignleft\" alt=\"Midyear photo2\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/beaverx\/files\/2014\/03\/Midyear-photo2.jpg\" width=\"696\" height=\"254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1894\/files\/2014\/03\/Midyear-photo2.jpg 870w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1894\/files\/2014\/03\/Midyear-photo2-300x109.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A spirited group of 40 OSU|OHSU students flocked to Orlando, Florida in December to attend the 2013 American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Midyear Clinical Meeting.\u00a0 To help prepare students in their residency endeavors, Midyear provided many exciting and informative events such as the national Clinical Skills Competition, SSHP Student Society Showcase, keynote speaker General Colin Powell, residency showcases, student and resident poster presentations, seminars and much more!<\/p>\n<p>Former U.S. Secretary of State and retired General Colin Powell helped to launch enthusiasm for the profession in this year\u2019s Midyear as the keynote speaker.\u00a0 Powell shared his thoughts on the current healthcare system and noted the hope and importance of being able to provide universal healthcare.\u00a0 Powell took it a step further to emphasize the significant role of pharmacists in coordinating patient care ranging from an acute care setting to day-to-day medication management as the healthcare system progresses.<\/p>\n<p>College of Pharmacy faculty member and alumni Dr. Daniel Rackham (\u201808) presented at two sessions.\u00a0 As a panel member for a session titled, \u201cPreceptor Development for the Resident: Balance Between Being Precepted and Precepting Students,\u201d Dr. Rackham addressed the \u201cResidents\u2019 Challenging Role: Preceptee, Preceptor, or Both.\u201d\u00a0 His session discussed the current thoughts on the critical balance between precepting residents and allowing residents to precept students.\u00a0 Dr. Rackham also presented the clinical pearl, \u201cTo Dip or Not to Dip: A Bedtime Story About Antihypertensives,\u201d that addressed the recommendation from the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Standards for Medical Care in Diabetes for diabetic patients to take one or more antihypertensives at bedtime. \u00a0The clinical pearl described the theory and evidence behind the ADA\u2019s recommendation. \u00a0Overall, Dr. Rackham enjoyed his experience as a presenter and the opportunity to interact with other Midyear attendees. \u00a0Dr. Rackham was also very proud of the representation from all OSU|OHSU students.<\/p>\n<p>The Clinical Skills Competition (CSC) was one of the major highlights of Midyear.\u00a0 Chapter finalists, Amy Higginson (P4) and Natalie Cardoza (P4), competed in the CSC at the national level. \u00a0Thank you to both for representing OSU|OHSU College of Pharmacy during the Midyear meeting!<\/p>\n<p>OSU|OHSU College of Pharmacy was proudly represented by over 20 posters in the student poster presentations. \u00a0Poster first authors included P4 students Kala Berkey, Natalie Cardoza, Kylee Kastelic, Christina Kowalewska, Mirue Lee, Joseph Mousa, Rachel Novak, Amar Patel, Tina Patel, Michelle Pfeifer, Andrew Quach, Tiffany Ruiz, Andrew Sowles, Andreea Steward, Vivian Tang, Michael Tice, Amanda Trieu, Long Trinh, Arrash Vahidi, and Stellar Yi and P3 student Jesse Feammelli. \u00a0Several faculty members from the Department of Pharmacy Practice mentored students on these projects and posters. \u00a0Thank you to Kathy Ketchum, Angie Mettie and Drs.
