Project H.E.R. (Health. Enlightenment. Resources.) is a program which provides awareness, education, and support to all women in Benton, Linn, and Lincoln counties who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. The program is made possible due to the hard work of a nurse navigator, a clinical social worker, MammaCare specialists, and numerous volunteers. One such volunteer is OSU College of Pharmacy alumnus Susan Poole (’69).
After graduating, Susan Poole worked within the OSU College of Pharmacy and Student Health Services. She has also served on the OSU Alumni Association Board, OSU Retirement Association Board, The Rebounders Board (OSU Women’s Basketball Booster Club), and has assisted with OSU Foundation activities.
Susan is particularly passionate about issues that effect women, children, and families. It is no surprise she was a part of the initial team brought together to help expand the fundraising capabilities of Project H.E.R. It was during this time that the Puttin’ on the Pink Education Day concept was created to raise awareness of the risks of breast cancer and provide women with the tools to live a healthy life. Following Puttin’ on the Pink Education Day is a Gala (held October 11th) to celebrate the courage and determination of those fighting cancer and who are survivors.
Dr. Arup Indra presented at the Puttin’ on the Pink event for Project H.E.R. (Health, Enlightenment, Resource). Susan Poole was there to give a warm introduction to Dr. Indra. His presentation, “A-B-C-D of Melanoma and Link to Breast Cancer,” shared his innovative research of the possible corollaries and similar markers between Melanoma and Breast Cancer. His was one of the most clinical talks to be included in this event, but he still captured the attention of a fully engaged audience. This presentation has raised the bar for future speakers and the expectation of what information attendees are interested in learning.
