We are proud to announce OSU has finished 1st place nationally in the 2019 ACCP Clinical Research Challenge. Congratulations to students Neda Kazerouni (’21), Kaitlyn Wells (’22), and Dale Wilkerson (’22) and faculty mentor Dr. Adriane Irwin!
The ACCP Clinical Research Challenge is a research skills competition for P1 and P2 students. The competition consists of three rounds. Round 1 is an online exam on literature evaluation skills and biostatistics. The top 40 teams then advance to Round 2 where they draft a letter of intent in response to a given scenario and research prompt. From there, the top 20 teams then proceed to Round 3 where they publish a full 12 page research proposal, including a budget. The competition takes place from February through April. This is the 4th year in a row where OSU College of Pharmacy students have finished in the top three.

OSU Today also wrote a feature in recognition of Kazerouni, Wells, Wilkerson, and faculty mentor Dr. Adriane Irwin (included below).
“A three-student team from the OSU College of Pharmacy defeated 81 other pharmacy schools to place first in the 2019 American College of Clinical Pharmacy’s Clinical Research Challenge.
Neda Kazerouni, Kaitlyn Wells and Dale Wilkerson represented Oregon State in the competition, which is for first- and second-year PharmD students. Adriane Irwin, clinical associate professor, is the team’s faculty advisor.
“Students compete through three rounds,” Irwin explained. “Round one is an online multiple-choice exam testing literature evaluation skills and biostatistics. The top 40 teams advance to round two, where they draft a letter of intent in response to a given scenario and research prompt.”
From that group of 40 teams, the highest-scoring 20 advance to the third and final round.
“They then draft a full 12-page research proposal with budget,” Irwin said, adding that the entire contest lasts only about 75 days. “It’s a very challenging competition with a very aggressive timeline.”
Oregon State’s winning proposal was titled “HEDIS Measures and Osteoporosis: A Clinical Pharmacy Approach to Optimize Fracture Care in Postmenopausal Females.”
The University of Michigan placed second, Cedarville University came in third, and the University of Maryland was fourth.
With their victory, Kazerouni, Wells and Wilkerson earn the right to present their research design during a poster session at the 2019 ACCP Annual Meeting in New York, New York, in October.”
