In April, OSU College of Pharmacy students partnered with students from OHSU, Western University of Health Sciences, Oregon College of Oriental Medicine, and the National College of Natural Medicine to provide free health screenings, personal hygiene items, flu shots, and dental, vision, and hearing exams for the uninsured and underserved populations of Portland.
The College of Pharmacy was located near the 6 Portable Patient Visit rooms. Upon being seen by a provider, patients would be referred to the pharmacy where they would pick up their over the counter medications, or receive a $4 gift card to Target where their prescriptions were called in on the 4 Dollar Program. Students had the opportunity to educate patients on the correct use of medications and answer questions patients had about their current medications.
Students provided an additional 7 vaccines (flu and tdap) to their growing count of vaccinations provided this year. The Diabetes Committee worked in collaboration with a group of nursing students from OHSU to provide blood glucose screenings and diabetes foot checks. Special thanks to preceptors Jenell Henson, Allen Ha (’12), Hong Nguyen (’12) and Matt Sono (’12) from Fred Meyer and Tara Berkson from the VA.
