2014 APhA-ASP Counseling Competition

Congratulations to P3 Allison Gille, the winner of the 2014 APhA-ASP Counseling Competition. Allison will represent the OSU/OHSU College of Pharmacy at the APhA-ASP National Patient Counseling Competition held in Orlando, FL, March 28 – 31, 2014,

The purpose of the annual APhA-ASP Patient Counseling Competition is to encourage student pharmacists in their efforts toward becoming effective patient educators. Student pharmacists are provided with the opportunity to demonstrate their patient communication skills while also competing to become the representative for their college of pharmacy at the national competition. The competition began at the local level with a total of 9 participants. From the preliminary round, all 9 participants were selected by the judges to advance to the final round based on their performance and interaction with the patient. In the final round, competitors counseled a new patient with a more complex case scenario. The judges reviewed video recordings to select a winner from each class. Allison Gille was awarded overall winner to represent OSU College of Pharmacy at the national competition. Each round participants were provided a list of 10 drugs to study from and one of the listed drugs was selected for the competition. The participants were given five minutes to prepare and five minutes to counsel a mock patient on the chosen drug.

P4 winner: Kaylee Williamson
