On the evening of May 4th, the Oregon State University College of Pharmacy alumni and friends gathered at the Portland City Grill to honor the recipients of the 2013 Icons of Pharmacy Award: Sandra Anderson, Michael Douglas and Edwin Schneider. Also, this was the inaugural year for the College of Pharmacy ‘s Outstanding Young Alumni Award. Kristina Butler from the Class of 1996 is the first to receive this honor.
Recognition as an Oregon State University Icon of Pharmacy and induction into the Pharmacy Hall of Fame is an honor reserved for those who have demonstrated dedication to the College of Pharmacy and distinguished themselves through sustained, meritorious contributions to pharmacy throughout their careers.
Sandy Anderson
Through her work at Central City Concern’s Old Town Clinic in Portland, OSU Alumnae, Sandra (Sandy) Anderson, demonstrates an unrivaled passion for providing assistance to underserved populations. Utilizing creativity and an innovative approach to patient care, she works to make a difference in the lives of people whose health concerns are compounded by issues such as homelessness and substance abuse.
Anderson grew up in Florence, OR and received her degree from OSU in 1973.
Fellow ’73 graduate and past recipient of the Icon of Pharmacy award, Bob Coulter, presented Anderson with this year’s honor.
Mike Douglas
Michael (Mike) Douglas for his decades of leadership as an independent pharmacy owner. His numerous accomplishments include the development of a buying group for pharmacies enabling more effective cost management, a collaboration that has expanded from 24 stores in Oregon to nearly 200 stores across the Western states. Douglas is a longtime member of the Oregon State Pharmacy Association, serving as President in 1998.
Born and raised in Newberg, OR, Douglas graduated with a degree in pharmacy from OSU in 1965.
College of Pharmacy ’77 graduate, Jeff Harder, presented Douglas with his Icon of Pharmacy award. Harder also a passionate advocate of independent pharmacy ownership and has worked closely with Douglas as part of the network of independent pharmacies that belong to the Western States buying group.
Ed Schneider
As a key leader in the development of the Professional Recovery Network and its partnership with the Oregon Board of Pharmacy, Edwin (Ed) Schneider has profoundly impacted the lives of pharmacists and healthcare professionals struggling with substance abuse. The program, which provides professionals with addiction recovery support, has seen tremendous success under Schneider’s leadership and has been replicated across the nation.
OSU College of Pharmacy Class of ’86 alumnus and Executive Director of the Oregon Board of Pharmacy, Gary Schnabel, presented Schneider him with the award. Schnabel has worked closely with Schneider through the Professional Recovery Network to bring the topic of professional recovery into public discussion.
The Oregon State College of Pharmacy is honored to recognize the remarkable commitment of Sandy Anderson, Michael Douglas and Ed Schneider to the field of Pharmacy and to the University. Their dedication is an inspiration for our students as they continue on their path to becoming pharmacists.
