Congratulations to Ian McClellan, a P3, the winner of the 2012 APhA-ASP Patient Counseling Competition! Ian also represented Oregon State University College of Pharmacy at the APhA-ASP National Patient Counseling Competition, held in New Orleans, LA, March 9 – 12, 2012.
The Patient Counseling Competition consisted of 17 participants who competed in the preliminary round. A list of 10 drugs that was given for them to study and one drug was selected from the list for the competition. This drug was incorporated into a scenario where the competitors counseled a mock patient. Participants were given 5 minutes to prepare and an additional 5 minutes to counsel with experienced faculty judges evaluating the recorded counseling. The top ten students were selected to move on to the final round. Judges reviewed the video recordings from the final round to vote on a winner from each class and rewarded Ian McClellan as the overall winner for our school.

This competition requires much coordination and time from our outstanding faculty and patient volunteers who made the competition successful. We would like to recognize the judges: Roberto Linares, Ann Zweber, Gary DeLander, and Lorinda Andersen.
A special thanks to our final round patient, Dr. Juancho Ramirez, who attended both campuses to provide consistent patient counseling. We also appreciate pre-pharmacy patient volunteers, our technical supporter, Gary Miller, and the wonderful work of our resident, Savanna Muravez, for writing the patient cases. We are grateful of the enormous support from the students and faculty and are looking forward to next year’s counseling competition!
