Elko & Bonneville Salt Flats

Our first overnight stay (not counting crossing the California border to Yreka) was in Elko Nevada – Lovely quite room – despite being in Casino country.

After leaving Elko, as we were about to cross the Nevada/Utah border and we were looking for a rest area when Linda alerted me that she had found Bonneville Salt Flats just ahead! We pulled off, drove into the national park and saw there was a lot of activity which I assumed was just another Sunday at Bonneville. Wrong! We accidentally happened to be passing by during the one week each year where land speed records are broken. We drove into Bonneville Speed Week!

At the entrance gate they let us know the costs would be $15 each, a bargain if we had more than an hour to waylay our travels, but the nice lady let us in for just the cost of a souvenir program : -)
