Internships

Internships are a great way to gain experience in the ESH field. The internship opportunities below are only a few possible resources, do note they all may not offer an ESH related internship annually. Search for internship postings on websites such as Linkedin, the ASSP Career Center,  Indeed, the EOH Professional Development and Career Opportunities page, and look at previous internship sites at the OSU Public Health Internship Directory.

Internship Opportunities-Government:

  • Marion County Health Department: Marion County departments engage students from local colleges and universities in projects that provide technical and professional experience. Current internship openings related to EOH are: Emergency Preparedness, Environmental Health, and Epidemiology.
  • Benton County Health Department: Benton County periodically has Environmental Health Internships for OSU students. Interns are typically Environmental Health practicum students. You must be in your junior or senior year to qualify. Interns will be asked to complete projects involving data collection or record analysis and will write reports of their results. Interns will help inspect restaurants and septic sites and will follow up on Environmental Health complaints and possible violations.
  • OR-OSHA: The Department of Consumer and Business Services LEAP Internship Program is for students 18 and older enrolled in school at least half time. The program gives interns a chance to get paid to learn, gain experience at Oregon’s largest business regulatory and consumer protection agency, and possibly earn college credit. OR-OSHA is one of the divisions this internship program falls under.

Internship Opportunities-Insurance Companies/Consultant Firms:

  • Liberty Mutual Insurance: Liberty Mutual has a national internship program, and one of their internship options is in Risk Control. In a Risk Control role at Liberty Mutual, you will play a vital part in helping to protect people, their businesses and their property. Risk Control Consultants support our commitment to helping people preserve and protect what they earn, build, own and cherish. Risk Control Consultant Interns will:
    • Focus on customer site visits and their professional development during this 10-12 week Risk Control internship
    • Work with experienced consultants and gain a better understanding of risk control, including occupational safety, as well as how basic concepts and principles are applied with customers
    • Gain exposure to a variety of industries over a short period of time
  • SAIF Corporation: SAIF offers a summer industrial hygiene internship that offers collaborative experiences with certified industrial hygienist and opportunities to work with a broad spectrum of businesses.
  • PBS Engineering and Environmental:

Internship Opportunities-Industry:

  • Intel: Environmental Health and Safety Internship responsibilities may be quite diverse of an exempt technical nature. U.S. experience and education requirements will vary significantly depending on the unique needs of the job. Job assignments are usually for the summer or for short periods during breaks from school.
  • Disney: As a member of the Worldwide Safety team, you will partner and interact with various departments on the coordination of cast and guest safety. Provide support to Manager and team and assist with the completion of a variety of responsibilities that include, but are not limited to: Assist in safety, health and sanitation/food safety audits, report findings, assist in the development of corrective action plans. Conduct field surveys such as indoor air quality, noise dosimetry, ventilation surveys, etc., report out on findings, develop and follow up on mitigations. Develop JSA’s to determine site-specific safety requirements such as engineering controls, equipment specifications, machine guarding requirements, personal protective equipment, training, and other controls. And much more!
  • Anheuser-Busch: This brewery, distribution, and packaging manufacturer periodically hires a Safety Intern that focuses on coordinating and working on special projects related to Safety or Logistics, consolidating and Analyzing safety data, Collaborating with management teams to identify needs, Coordinating and improving safety processes, Conduct and document training, and much more.

Internship Opportunities-Other:

  • The Corvallis Sustainability Coalition:  The Corvallis Sustainability Coalition has EOH/ESH volunteer and internship opportunities every term. Interns will fulfill a variety of roles and work on one or more projects/programs that will focus on several areas of sustainability, including work with one or more of the action teams. This internship provides flexible hours and meeting times, along with the option to fulfill a 6 credit (180 hours) or a 12 credit (360 hours) internship, depending on the needs of the applicant. Applicants are expected to keep consistent communication throughout the term with their supervisor and be held accountable for all work done through the Coalition. This internship is unpaid, it is located in Corvallis and meetings will be held close to campus at various locations.
  • Occupational Health Internship Program (OHIP): this is a full time paid summer internship designed to link the skills and interests of students with the needs of workers employed in an under-served or high hazard job. Interns are assigned to a union or worker organization where they receive supervision from a designated staff member and an academic mentor.
