Now that the Final Fantasy XII HD Remaster is out…

When I first played Final Fantasy XII (by Square Enix) on the PlayStation 2, I was impressed with how visually stunning the graphics were… for about five feet in front of my character. The draw distance was very low, making anything that wasn’t in the foreground blurry. It was like playing a game as a nearsighted person with no glasses. This was due to the hardware limitations of the PS2.

Sure, the game had other problems when it came out. Kotaku, a video game blog website, recently posted a review in which they discuss the merits of the new version as well as fixing some of those old flaws.

Now, the game has been updated to a High Definition version for the PlayStation 4, titled Final Fantasy XII: the Zodiac Age. This YouTube video compares the two versions and the difference is stunning. My single biggest complaint about the PS2 version was how difficult it was to see what was going on. It’s heartening to see they’ve cleaned it up so much and I’m looking forward to playing the new PS4 version for myself.
