My English lit class met for the first time this\u00a0morning, and we began with several fun, interactive activities to establish a foundation for us to build upon\u00a0as we read works like <em>Beowulf<\/em>, <em>The Canterbury Tales<\/em>, <em>A Midsummer Night&#8217;s Dream<\/em>, etc. One of these activities\u00a0involved finding examples of kennings, which, in Old English poetry, are compounds of two words that together offer a metaphorical description\/synonym of\u00a0an ordinary word. Some of them are hilarious! There, we got on a double-decker, open-top bus with a great tour guide, who spun tales and pointed out significant\/interesting\/funny places around the western portion of the city. I was most excited to see Big Ben up close, and I later found out that the name &#8216;Big Ben&#8217; actually refers to<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_66\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66\" style=\"width: 220px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-66\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/adventuresacrossthepond\/files\/2016\/08\/Essense-of-London-269x300.jpg\" alt=\"Quintessential London... Bustling sidewalks, black cabs, gorgeous flats, red phone booths, the London Eye on the horizon... Also, and advert for the comedy 'Naked Musicians'!\" width=\"220\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/2711\/files\/2016\/08\/Essense-of-London-269x300.jpg 269w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/2711\/files\/2016\/08\/Essense-of-London-768x855.jpg 768w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/2711\/files\/2016\/08\/Essense-of-London-919x1024.jpg 919w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/2711\/files\/2016\/08\/Essense-of-London-1200x1336.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-66\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Quintessential London&#8230; Bustling sidewalks, black cabs, gorgeous flats, red phone booths, the London Eye on the horizon&#8230; Also, an advert for the comedy &#8216;Naked Magicians&#8217;!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>the 13\u00a0ton\u00a0bell inside the tower, not the building itself! Our route took us all along the Thames and the\u00a0many\u00a0famous landmarks in that part of London, most of which we&#8217;ll be visiting on foot later.
