On 23-24 October 2017, Oregon State University, Washington State University, and University of Idaho will convene a second workshop to catalyze tri-state research on food-energy-water (FEW) systems. As population grows and climate change alters ecosystems worldwide, societal demands for agricultural, energy and water resources continue to intensify and the couplings among FEW resources come into sharper focus. Solutions that ease cross-sectoral tensions and alleviate pressure on FEW resources will inevitably involve deep collaboration among multiple disciplines and institutions.
The Vice Presidents for Research at WSU, UI, and OSU together are seeking interdisciplinary teams poised to address FEW research challenges, representing UI, WSU, OSU, Idaho National Lab, and Pacific Northwest National Lab.
The Tri-State FEW Workshop is envisioned to be an interactive and intensive gathering of 4-6 distinct, multi-institutional research teams who use the face-to-face time with colleagues for actively developing funding strategies (e.g. grant proposals) and program building. The 4-6 individual teams will work together on their focused research plans, with multiple opportunities to interact across teams as well, in order to maximize complementarity among research groups.
Participants were accepted based on a proposal:
Researchers submitted a 1-page proposal for convening a multi-institutional team to gather at the Tri-State FEW Workshop. Successful proposals will present:
1) a compelling vision for interdisciplinary FEW research;
2) specific funding targets (e.g. National Science Foundation INFEWS program, DOE Energy-Water, USDA NIFA Water for Agriculture);
3) a multi-institutional team with confirmed participation by key individuals, and;
4) a tractable timeline for achieving research goals, including the manner in which the workshop will further the goals.
For teams / attendees who attended the Couer d’Alene FEW Workshop in April 2017 please provide a statement describing progress on the proposal since the April workshop. The Lead Principal Investigator(s) should append a 2-page CV that includes his/her most relevant publications or other products in the past 5 years, and his/her most relevant funding in the past 5 years. Research teams must involve confirmed participants from more than one Tri-State institution, and are encouraged to be as inclusive as possible. Participants from other institutions also may be named.
