Teaching T.A.L.K.S. IV: Today’s Academics Linking Knowledge & Skills.

Join the statewide conversation and hear keynote speaker, Lynn Pasquerella, President of AAC&U, on Thursday, March 8th at 6:30pm, and spend the day Friday, March 9th, learning and practicing creative thinking and team work with various featured speakers.  More information on the program is forthcoming.

As educators, many, if not most, of us have developed a variety of approaches for the development of students’ critical thinking skills. Yet students, facing into the world as it is, must do more than critique, analyze, and deconstruct in order both to envision the world as they’d like it to be and to engage individually and collectively in making that world. Through reflection, activities, and dialogue, we’ll explore strategies for developing our creative capacities in and through our professional roles in order to serve as catalysts for the development of creative capacity in our students.

In this session, we will extend the work we began in the morning session through continuing our design and development processes, consulting with each other around strategies for enhancing the creative possibilities in our work, and reflecting on the import of creative thinking and expression in and through our professional roles.
Ag Science 2. Team Work Group; Veronica Koehn, Associate Professor, Communication, Oregon Tech, Kevin Brown, Professor, Communication, Oregon Tech, and Dave Foster, Professor, Psychology, Western Oregon University

The panel will discuss Oregon Tech’s three-tiered Teamwork General Education requirement. The presentation will discuss the process involved in campus buy-in to Teamwork as a goal, and the on-going process of defining and assessing teamwork. We are implementing a model where Teamwork is introduced at the foundational level, applied at the practice level, and measured at the capstone level. Dr. Foster will discuss how he uses Kolb’s model of experiential learning as the foundational underpinning in designing his teamwork and creativity courses.
Wells Fargo 3. Assessment Shop Talk; Led by Rowanna Carpenter, Director of Assessment for University Studies, Portland State University, and Chris Brooks, Chair of the Portland Community, College Learning Assessment Council

Come and talk shop with your colleagues from other colleges and universities across the state! This session will focus on how assessment works at different institutions, identify shared challenges, and allow participants to pick up ideas and make new contacts.
Ag Leaders 4. Peer Collaboration on Assignment Design; Sue Monahan, Associate Provost for Academic Effectiveness, Western Oregon University

We are all experienced teachers/learners, but novices in fields beyond our own. In this interactive workshop, we’ll bring that distinct perspective to reviewing our colleague’s assignments: To provide feedback on how students might read and approach an assignment, and how we might tweak our assignments so that we give students the best opportunities for success. We’ll also talk about strategies for bringing attention to assignment design back to our campuses. We encourage you to bring a hard copy of one assignment that you use in your teaching that you would like to focus on, or to be able to pull that assignment up on your device of choice (laptop, tablet, etc.).

Parking Information

Between the hours of 7 am and 5 pm, visitor parking is available in the parking lot across from The LaSells Stewart Center and in the parking garage north of the Alumni Center. Visitor parking permits are available at kiosks in the parking areas.

Evenings after 5 pm, and on weekends, Center patrons may park in visitor lots at no charge.

Vehicles without permits parked in permit spaces before 5 pm on weekdays will be ticketed. Bicycle parking is located at the Center’s north entrance. Parking for those staying at the Hilton Garden Inn is free in the Hilton Garden Inn parking lot.
